How to Enjoy Halloween When You’re Squeamish

If you’re like me, you might get grossed out by excessive gore or body horror. I can’t handle gore (I passed out watching Silence of the Lambs, so I physically cannot do it). I also scare easily because of my anxiety, which doesn’t help. I don’t like horror movies, and any haunted house, hayride, or maze is a no-go for me. It makes it hard for me to enjoy certain activities that come with celebrating Halloween. So, to avoid feeling left out during the spooky season, here are some ways to still enjoy Halloween when you’re squeamish.

  1. Watch a non-horror movie or television special!

Obviously, if horror movies are out of the question, it might be better to watch something less scary. Throw on your coziest pair of pajamas, pop some popcorn, and watch something classic like It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, which is streaming for free on AppleTV+ from October 28 to October 31. To continue the nostalgic feeling, there’s Hocus Pocus on Disney+ and The Addams Family on Netflix. Also on Disney+ are tons of Halloween Disney Channel Original Movies to choose from.

  1. Carve a pumpkin!

It might be cliché, but carving pumpkins is a fun Halloween-themed activity you can do either by yourself or with friends! Pumpkin carving kits are relatively cheap, and pumpkins are typically sold at most grocery stores this time of year. There are also tons of carving ideas on the Internet, so don’t be afraid to get creative!

  1. Keep a bucket of Halloween candy in your dorm!

For all my fellow college students, keeping a bucket of Halloween candy in your dorm is an easy but fun way to be festive! If you keep it by your door, you’ll have a little treat waiting for you every time you leave or return. Little things like these will brighten up your day.

  1. Decorate your dorm!

Decorating your dorm is another easy way to celebrate the spooky season. My roommate has had Halloween window clings up since September, and I have also seen cobwebs as decorations around campus. Most decorations are inexpensive and will make your room feel extra festive.
