Why I Broke My Christmas Decoration Traditions

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Lancaster chapter.

Following on from last year’s discussion, I have been intrigued to know the stance that is taken about when the festive season really begins. Or, specifically, when does it become socially acceptable to put up your festive decorations?

Personally, I have always thought that the festive season doesn’t officially begin until December.

Retail would have us believe it begins a lot earlier than this though!

People also seem to rely on the timing of the Christmas light switch-on in their local towns as a cue to put up their own decorations at home.

My housemates managed to persuade me to put our Christmas decorations up a couple of days ago, justified by how it was less than a month until the big day. I also think it is slightly different at uni, as you typically go home for the Christmas period which means you wouldn’t be able to appreciate your decorations.

I would recommend decorating your uni house or flat if haven’t already planned to- it definitely makes it a lot more homely. If you have had a long, stressful day staring at the same four walls in the library, it is comforting to be greeted by a bit of festive cheer.
