How To Be Lancaster Savvy (Part One)

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Lancaster chapter.

You made it! You’re at a Top Ten UK University (just in case you’ve been living under a rock), you’re destined for academic success, and the brink of adulthood is coming at you with full force. But, when it comes to insider knowledge of campus, does anyone really even have the slightest clue…? Well you are not alone! Really knowing all the inside secrets, shortcuts, loopholes and up-the-sleeve tricks takes years (take it from me – I first came to Lancaster in 2012..!). Let Nana Emma’s years of wisdom help you avoid some common pitfalls and introduce you to some hidden gems here at Lancaster University…

1. Buses. Underpass. ‘The dreaded 2A’. New kids on the block often arrive at the Underpass and have *no idea* how the bus routes work around here, especially those unfamiliar with the North. You probably all know by now that the 3 is the most direct route to Lancaster and the 2A is to be avoided *AT ALL COSTS*, but a 3 to Morecambe is still a 3 via Lancaster, and coming back to campus, a 41/42 to Preston calls at the Underpass as quick as the 3 does. Just check the front of the bus to see where it goes ‘via’, and if in doubt, just ask the driver. The iLancaster app has live timetables to give you the most accurate information too, and while I don’t want you to bet your life on it, I’ve successfully gambled away many a 2A for the 3 that follows shortly behind.

2. Unbeknown to all but the blessed few who at this stage in the game are somewhat library connoisseurs, the super renovated building houses eight staircases, two lifts, and even – of course – a tree to help you blend in, sneak out, and cover your tracks (not looking at anyone in particular). That means you can study to your heart’s content with no more awkward scurrying past that guy on B floor you confessed your love to on a Hustle Tuesday.

3. Not sure your greasy 3am Sultans will keep to your Instagram theme? If you’re feeling a little underwhelmed by the obvious (but glorious) food outlets around Alexandra Square without trekking off campus, consider rooftop Café 21 at the Infolab (on the ring-road near Pendle College). If you get in quick before winter comes (which, lasts approximately 8 months in Lancaster), you might just be able to withstand the outdoor seating area that boasts views of rolling Lancashire hills whilst tucking into a Glamorgan veggie sausage sandwich. Mmmmmm.

4. Fancy a jog around campus but too afraid you might bump into all your Tinder matches, the seminar tutor whose class you overslept, and the girl who keeps asking for your lecture notes? Take a trip to the woodland trail. Skirted around the perimeter of campus, the woodland trail transports you instantly from concrete jungle into a leafy, wooden pathway that stretches around the majority of campus. Particularly pretty right now with the golden autumn tones, and perfect for a wander without having to venture too far away from your room.

5. You’ll be surprised at how quick your time at Lancaster passes, so the key ingredient to making the most of it is to get stuck in. Most of you will have joined societies at Fresher’s Fair, but getting involved doesn’t stop there. The Base can help you to find part-time work for the Uni, which adds oodles of value to your CV in a way that fits around your timetable and other academic commitments. You might even consider nominating yourself in the upcoming JCR elections to get involved on a more collegiate level (Fylde ‘til I die!). Even on a departmental level, there’s ways to volunteer and give something back to the University, whilst adding some invaluable skills and experience to your CV. After all, now’s the time to do it! (And trust me, the time seriously flies).
