Being Realistic About New Year’s Resolutions

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Lancaster chapter.

Like many people I’m the absolute worst and keeping to my New Year’s Resolutions. Over the years I’ve had a few: to snack less, exercise more, keep my room tidy. The only resolution I’ve stuck to is when I resolved not to go anywhere near my eyebrows with a pair of tweezers until they’d grown back in.

When I was picking a resolution for 2018, I had a think about why my eyebrow promise was so successful, and it was pretty obvious. Growing my eyebrows back was something I really wanted to do, something that just happened to coincide with a New Year, something I would have done anyway. It was a small, achievable change. So this year I’m doing something which I’ve told myself I’d do for the past two years: I’m looking after myself. I’m doing one thing every day which is solely about looking after me.

Whether it’s going to bed earlier, eating three meals a day, doing a bit of exercise, I just want to look after myself better. So far, I’ve not been the best at it. I kicked off 2018 with a disgusting hangover and a patchy recollection of the night before, and there have definitely been days over the holiday when I’ve not got out of bed, but I don’t mind. I’ve not put any pressure on myself this year, I’m making small changes gradually and, fingers crossed, they’ll become part of my routine and come naturally to me.

It’s only 13 days into January and I’m already feeling a difference, and it’s this positive change which is motivating me to carry on looking after myself and to also be less hard on myself. I’m in my final year of uni, and stress is coming at me from every angle so I need to pressure off myself in other places. A more relaxed resolution is the only kind I might be able to stick to, and choosing one which I’m already motivated to do will mean I’m way less like likely to give up.

So bring on 2018, here’s hoping it’s a little less stressful than last year.
