In the wake of social distancing, many of us are scrambling to find a new normal. For me, the most difficult part has been managing how to stay close to people when it’s government-mandated that we stay apart. If you are separated from a significant other, friend, or family, here are some ideas on ways you can bond together during this difficult time. Consider these jumping-off points to find what works for you and your socially-distanced crew!

  • Play video games!

Whether you’re using Steam, PlayStation, or Game Pigeon, playing video games is a good way to connect with friends from all across the world. As an added bonus, games can help you focus on strategy in an alternate universe, distracting you all from the craziness happening in ours.

  • Binge a show!

Using the free Google Chrome extension Netflix Party, or any video-calling app that allows for screen share, you can start a new show (preferably with a lot of episodes) and watch with friends in real time! It’s something to do that occupies your mind and gives you and your friends something to talk about other than the news.

  • Have FaceTime workout sessions!

If you want to get active, but feel unmotivated to work out alone, contact a friend you went to the gym with at school. Use your laptops to watch a workout tutorial on YouTube together, or just agree on a set of exercises, and video chat while you get moving. Having a workout buddy helps you both stay motivated and feel less alone in your fitness endeavors.

  • Paint together!

Using whatever materials each of you have in your respective homes, get creative! Enjoy each other’s company and do your own thing, follow the same Bob Ross tutorial, or create portraits of each other to share at the end. It’s all about what feels best for you and your friends!

It’s important now more than ever to stay in touch with people who bring you joy. This is the perfect time to reach out to old friends and rekindle a bond, or to find new hobbies you can enjoy with other people even while apart. I wish you and your loved ones positivity, hope, and health during this challenging time. Remember, these circumstances are not permanent! Keep on keeping on and know that in time, you will get to hug your people again.
