Fun Things to Do on Zoom Besides Talking

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Lafayette chapter.

Video-calling became the new normal, but even though you can see and talk to your friends online, it’s not quite the same as being in person. This might be because it feels like the only thing you can do is talk. No bubble tea sipping, mall perusing, cake baking, karaoke singing, sleepover madness… Or is there? It might feel like there’s more pressure to have a stimulating conversation over Zoom rather than just being together, but here are some fun ideas to switch it up and take some of that pressure off:

Karaoke from home

Have one person share their screen and play karaoke videos on YouTube for whoever is taking the digital stage. If you want to go really wild, have everyone try to sing along at the same time (I recommend a Miley Cyrus ballad for this one. Think “The Climb” or “When I Look at You.” Chills.)

At home cooking class

So you may not be able to go to your favorite brunch spot or bubble tea place, but why not learn how to make it from home? Find a recipe and forward to everyone before the call, then all try to make it from your own kitchens over the video-calling service of your choice. Afterwards, you can conduct taste tests and give each other your personal review of your work. Maybe have a sibling or two weigh in as well.

Have a fashion show for all the outfits you would be wearing out

If you haven’t made a TikTok showcasing the fabulous outfits you’d be wearing if you weren’t in quarantine already, consider showing them off to your friends! They’re too good not to be seen, right? Never a better time than now to rediscover old favorites hiding in the back of your closet.

Sleepover dupe

Look, it’s not the real thing, and we all know it, but it’s pretty close and we’re happy with it, right? If you’re missing sleepovers, try having them virtually! Have each person load up with snacks, change into PJs, and then have a Netflix party with everyone’s favorite flick. Play MASH and/or F***, Marry, Kill, argue endlessly about whether or not Michael Cera is attractive (don’t @ me), and paint your nails! Do a facemask! Venture down to the kitchen for MORE pickles! Send your favorite Snapchat memories back and forth when you hit the sentimental part of the evening. And most importantly, you’re probably gonna want to have a charger on hand, because you’re gonna be staying up a little late.

These are just a few ideas, but challenge yourself to think of a way to do your favorite in-person activities with friends over Zoom instead. Just for something a little different than just talking, and because we miss all the fun times too, obviously. Good luck babes!
