Life Got You Stressed?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Kutztown chapter.

If there’s only one common thing among humans everywhere, it’s the fact that we all get stressed out from time to time (some more than others on multiple occasions) and the way one deals with stress or doesn’t at all can affect their health. Ignoring stress and bottling it up is detrimental to not only mental health but physical health as well. Relieving stress is something that varies from person to person, but here are some general tips that I’ve tried that have me stress-free (at least for an hour or two until reality sets in).

Creating something, in my opinion, is the biggest stress reliever of all. Whether it’s a craft project, painting, cooking, decorating or rearranging your space, putting makeup on or doing your hair, finding a creative outlet and expressing yourself in a positive way can really clear your mind and fulfill parts of your life that were being neglected by stress.

Nature is beautiful, unbiased, quiet, and tranquil. Sometimes when you’re stressed out, the peaceful serenity of nature can give you all the answers you need, and can put the world back into perspective when it seems like it’s falling apart. Go for a nature walk, hike, picnic, do yoga, whatever puts you in tune with nature can change your attitude towards your stress.

Playing games can set the mind free and let it have some leisure time. This can be video games, board games, apps, whatever kind of games tickle your fancy. Personally, I enjoy playing the Sims3 when I’m stressed because it gives me a sense of control and lets me relax my mind after having a stressful day.

Writing can be almost as therapeutic as talking to a trusted friend or therapist. You can write about whatever is stressing you out and not have to worry about anyone misinterpreting what you say or giving you their unwanted opinion. Writing lets you get it all out and keep it private, which can be an interesting and helpful thing to read later in life when you’re stressed again or want to reflect on your life.

Exercise has a way of freeing the body and mind of stress that’s unlike any other muse. When you’re physically active, the brain releases chemicals that promote happiness and exuberance. Depending on the workout, you can really get your emotions out. Recently I have taken kickboxing classes and not only does it work my butt into shape, but it also helps me get out my aggressions. I leave feeling lighter, happier and less stressed.

Life is hard and seems unbearable at times, but it is what you make it and if you can make it easier even for an hour while you play the Sims or take a quick hike, the bad stuff won’t seem so bad knowing you have an escape.

21 years old, always lost, but finding meaning in life in the little things. Give me a crappy cup of coffee, a laugh and a smile and we'll be friends. Love yourself.
