The Dissolution of Unrequited Book Review

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Kutztown chapter.

Every concept has a state of dissolution … even between best friends.

The theory: To find herself and pursue her dreams of completing her Ph.D.

The solution: Walk away from the love that hurt her the most, and put herself first.

The results: A life changing choice between her heart and her future.

The dissolution: … of unrequited as AJ and Evan know it.

The Dissolution of Unrequited (Book 4) SPOILER FREE!

It has been several weeks since I put down the last novel to the Science of Unrequited series. I read the ARC (Advanced Readers Copy) so I finished the novel a week before the world could in four days. To tell you all about the tetralogy that has rocked my world and the writing I’ve known for so long.

This series will rip your emotions to shreds and trying to tape them back together again. With anger, love, fighting, acceptance, moving on, loss, and more integrity and respect than most authors would give these characters, International Best-Selling Author Len Webster has finished her series after three years in the making. A small story of best friends for life and an unrequited love turned into a mature, engaging love story that didn’t give us a moment to breathe, or a moment of happiness until the very end.

The longest book yet, Dissolution clocks in at 615 pages. It took our hearts and swayed them to and fro, making us wonder what was about to happen. I actually couldn’t open the book for a few minutes after receiving the email from Webster herself. I was too afraid of what my favorite characters were capable of—and worse, what Webster was capable of. Dissolution wrapped up the story points we waited for.

With this being the fourth book in the series, it’s hard not to spoil some of the smaller aspects from past books. Simple questions like: Why did AJ give up Stanford and go to Duke? What happened during Prom? What happened during the road trip from Duke to Brookline? Who is Connecticut? have all been answered by book four.

Keeping as many spoilers out as I can, book four does what you expect. The novel jumps to the future, with the pair out of college, and back to the present, back during each other’s sophomore year of college. The story progress’ forward in both aspects, learning about Evan and AJ through college, and a few years later as well. We watch them both suffer and love and fall apart. We watch AJ arrive home for a family matter, and journey back to her location. We see interactions between the couple that make us question who they are with one another and if you want them together or not. By the end, however, there truly is a dissolution to unrequited.

One incredible piece of information I can say is Webster’s knowledge of physics makes any reader want to be as smart and talented as AJ through all four novels. She dreams of being a physicist, and her love for physics only grows throughout all four novels. She is presented with wonderful opportunities, assists in creating formulas and works for influential physicists.

Webster simplifies all this information for people who may not understand the world of science and essentially puts it into terms of love. Each piece of the story ties together with her love for Evan Gilmore. Every chapter of the series is a number on the periodic table. The series cannot be what it is without the periodic table, and how each book is named after the most important one: Oxygen, Arsenic, Holmium, and Nobelium.

With each novel title revealed through the story, perfectly hidden between the words and phrases used, so organic it takes your breath away, Webster crafted a novel of perfect secrets, surprises, and endings we find ourselves happy with.

This is an important series to read. Our female lead, while emotional and driven by her love, also recognizes how smart and talented she is. A woman like Alexandra Parker following her dreams of being a famous physicist is important for today’s younger generation. As we age, we’re told we cannot do what men can do, be in the same jobs, earn the same money, or be held to the same standard. AJ Parker breaks down those walls with each novel as a stepping stool.

If Webster’s words don’t shake you to your core, expose you to the love that you’ll feel between this pair of friends since birth, their families, friends or story, then maybe the subtle messages will.

Alexandra Parker is the character females need to read about, learn from and become. While an unrequited love is what pulled me in, I also know that, as a woman, I want to share this character with the world.

Webster has given so much to the writing community, 15 international best-sellers. It’s time we start following her footsteps to help.

“Nobelium was named after Alfred Nobel. He invented dynamite and was the founder of the Nobel Prizes. He was a benefactor to science and, in turn, supported many scientists, their dreams, and the future. And well, she’s my Nobel Prize. My purpose.”
