Valentine’s Depression

We’re in the midst of that time of the year again. In the depth of the winter months when getting out of bed becomes unreasonably difficult and paying attention in class feels nearly impossible. The seasonal depression is 100% real.

I think this happens because during the first semester of the school year, there is so much to look forward to; September brings football, parties and new friends; in October there’s a fall break and Halloween; November has thanksgiving; as for December, it gives us a month off of school full of our favorite holidays!

However once January gets here, the clock suddenly stops moving. It’s an endless wave of exhaustion and boredom. There’s not a single thing to look forward to until Valentine’s Day and let’s be honest, unless you’re gonna party away your soul with your best Galentines, this holiday only applies to couples.

So, what exactly is Valentine’s Day like for us college students?

In my opinion, this is the one day a year those who are in relationships get to have more fun than those who are single. It’s the one day where unless you’re meeting up with a Tinder date, you’re miserable and alone as a single person. I’m not sure why, but the whole campus feels so awkward? There’s a high essence of judgement coming from the people who can freely hold hands walking down the street directed towards the people who kissed four strangers last night.

The college experience can look extremely different for single people than it does for taken people. When you’re single, there’s not a care in the world about what time you come home or who you’re hanging out with. If you’re dating someone, especially if they’re long distance, you have obligations and cannot make the same silly, reckless decisions you can when you’re single.

So as much as we hate it- the hearts, the handholding, the kisses- let’s just allow the couples this one day where they can be better than us. We still have the other 364 days to have more fun!
