5 Ways to #treatyourself on a Budget

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at KU chapter.

College life is hectic, stressful, and never seems to slow down. It is easy to go day by day without taking any time off. This is your permission to take some time, relax, chill out, and do something for yourself. Here are 5 ways to #treatyourself without breaking the bank because girl, you deserve it.

1. At home spa

Spa visits can cost over $100 for one visit. Take the cheaper road and create your own spa day in the comfort of your own home. Grab a facemask from Target, give yourself a mani and pedi, put on some relaxing music, exfoliate with a sugar scrub. The possibilities are endless, but the results are rejuvenating.

2. Cook a fancy meal.

While your go-to dinner may be ramen or cereal, take one night to actually cook a meal. Check out online sites like Tasty or Spoon University for recipes and channel your inner Top Chef. Don’t be afraid of dessert either. You’re treating yourself, remember? Bonus: Depending on the size of the recipe, you will probably have enough for leftovers the following week.

3. Take a Yoga Class… on YouTube

Yoga is one of the best ways to de-stress and get a good workout in, but yoga classes can seriously put a dent in your wallet. Instead, put on some cute yoga gear (or just an old, smelly t-shirt) and take a yoga class via YouTube. It’s free and no one can judge you if your downward dog isn’t perfect.

4. Set Your Planner Aside

As college students, the daily schedule is jammed packed with class, meetings, work, and basically everything else. It may seem like you never have a break. I am here to tell you; you deserve a break. “Me time” is just as important as anything else on your schedule. So set the planner aside for an entire day or even just a few hours. Use this time to do something you like to do but normally don’t get the chance to. Maybe it’s reading a book, volunteering, or calling an old friend to catch up. Treat yourself to free time.

5. Turn your phone off. No seriously, turn it off.

This may be the hardest one on the list. We have become overly attached to constantly checking our phones. Sometimes it’s unbelievable to think about how much time a day is wasted doing meaningless stuff on your phone. The best way to treat yourself is powering down your phone and taking a break from screen time. Think of how productive you could be in one hour without being distracted from your phone. It may be hard, but it’s definitely worth it.

Jenna is a Strategic Communications sophomore at the University of Kansas. She wants to visit all 50 states by the time she's 30, having checked 25 off the list so far. She also wants to travel to Thailand, Austria, Singapore, Ireland, and Zimbabwe, just to name a few. If you want to cook her dinner, stick to any authentic Mexican. Chile Relenos and guacamole are a good place to start. She has a love for God, running, wasting hours laying in the sun, and making the most of every weekend.
