When it’s raining outdoors, it’s usual to notice a shift in moods, such as sadness or poor self-esteem. Some people are more prone to feeling lonely or depressed than others.

We should expect our summers to grow more extreme in terms of temperature and rainfall as the climate crisis intensifies.

What can you do if wet weather has a negative impact on your mood?

Clearly, the first step is to advocate for immediate climate action, being involved in activism tends to make you happier. However, there are several additional ways to lift your spirits when the weather is gloomy.

During a rainstorm, even if you’re tempted to turn off the lights and crawl into bed, make the decision to turn them on instead.

Are you huddled inside because it’s pouring cats and dogs outside? Do things that make you happy, such as watching a happy movie, reading a good book, doing arts and crafts, or playing a game.

If you’re down in the dumps, you should stand up — literally. It’s important to engage in physical activities, this can significantly improve energy levels can help with self-esteem, and release endorphins, which have a beneficial influence on mood. Working up a sweat by watching a YouTube exercise video, doing sit-ups, or turning on some music and dancing can help you feel warm indoors even if it’s cold and raining outdoors.

It’s common for people to isolate themselves when it’s raining. However, when people are alone, it can appear that things are far worse than they actually are. It’s tempting to stay inside and avoid people during inclement weather, but withdrawing socially can at times be both a symptom and a cause of poor mental health. Make plans to see folks – and remember what the pandemic has taught us— texting or video chatting is still a terrific way to stay in touch and boost your mood. Connect with others rather than hiding from the rain by staying inside, and your mood will be brighter — no matter how dark and dreary the weather may be outside.

We all know that being in nature and being in green places is healthy for us and makes us happier. Getting out of the house in appropriate clothing for a brisk walk or a low-level hill walk can turn into an adventure.

And lastly, make sure to get some sunshine when the sun does shine.
