Winter has officially hit Gambier, and I will admit that so far it’s incredibly underwhelming. Where are the inches upon inches of snow and the blistering cold days that have a high of 10 degrees? Although this may not be the most typical Ohio winter, it’s still cold enough to wear a winter jacket on most days. With that in mind, I’ve taken the liberty of testing out some fun hacks to keep you warm this winter as you make your way across campus.

Double up on Socks

This is the best tip that I can give you, and it can be used with any pair of shoes. Unfortunately, as you see by the picture below, there is such a thing as too many pairs of socks. Pro tip: if your ankle looks like you just sprained it, you put on too many pairs of socks.

Wear Leggings Under Your Pants

This is actually one of my favorite hacks. I got the idea from my friend Jack, who wears them to keep his legs extra warm. I tried them out when I had a long day of classes, and I found them to be incredible! They’re also a lot cheaper than the traditional long johns, so I think they’re always a safe bet when you need a little extra warmth.

Make Waterproof Socks by Covering Them in Plastic Bags

I think that this is really only useful if you don’t have any waterproof boots, because wearing bags on your feet actually isn’t very comfortable. It will keep your feet dry though, so if you will be outside in the cold for a long period of time and your feet might get wet, I think that wearing bags on your feet is a good option.

Wear Clothes Right out of the Dryer

I loved this! My sweaters felt so warm and fluffy. Sadly, the warmth was short lived, but I enjoyed it while it lasted.

Microwave Your Underwear

If you don’t want to spend the money to pop your clothes in the drying every time you want to warm them, you could try microwaving them as well. My biggest concern when trying this was about either starting a fire or melting the plastic in my underwear. Luckily neither of those things happened, and I had some toasty underwear for my walk to Peirce in the morning!

So, if you’re worried about the chilly Gambier air this winter, I encourage you to check out these fun winter hacks to stay warm this month!
