The Trials and Tribulations of Having Curly Hair

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Kenyon chapter.

Nothing gets on my nerves more than when people with straight hair complain about “frizz.” You do not know the meaning of frizzy hair. It might be a little unruly or perhaps appear slightly messy, but your hair does not get frizzy naturally. You do not know the struggle of desperately applying hair product post shower so you don’t end up looking like Bozo the Clown or the feeling of panic when you realize that it’s raining outside and you have no way to protect your hair from being completely ruined until you wash it again.

I have not met a single curly girl who didn’t hate their hair at some point in their life. For me, it was literally until I was about 15, when I finally discovered a hair product that worked and didn’t give me triangular hair. But, until then, I was so jealous of the girls with princess hair that could be easily styled and brushed. I even went so far as to attempt curling my already very curly hair and that went about as well as you would expect. But how could you blame me for my intense hatred of my natural hair? I couldn’t get my hair wet when I went swimming, and all hairstyles looked ridiculous due to the crown of frizz always circling my head.

(not even that bad of a picture of my triangular hair)

However, there are some pros that I would like to share with you:

You don’t have to wash it everyday

In fact, it is recommended that you don’t. Washing your curly hair removes the natural oils needed to keep your hair hydrated and bouncy. And, thankfully, at least for me, the product I use keeps it smelling like coconuts for a very long time. So, while it does take a long time to wash initially, you don’t have to touch for at least 36 hours afterward.

It’s tons of fun to play with

In case you’ve never touched curly hair (please ask before doing so, I can feel you touching my hair, thank you very much) it is extremely bouncy and fun to play with. I could spend hours just playing with my own hair, and maybe I’m just easily amused, but it’s definitely a great distraction during a particularly dull Economics lecture.

It holds its shape

Gone are the days of scrambling for two ponytail holders because you decided to wear braids that day. Curly hair will literally hold a braid for hours without coming undone, even lasting through entire softball tournaments, in my own experience. Curly hair is truly magical.                                                                                                      (catch that braids with one ponytail look)

It’s a great hiding spot

I have discovered that not everyone can effortlessly hide things in their hair like I can. I have lost a number of bobby pins in my hair after school dances and ballroom dance competitions. If nothing else, I could make quite a successful career for myself as a magician or something, except I would pull a rabbit out of my hair instead of a hat.

It’s always in style

While y’all are off trying the latest haircuts and trends with your straight hair, I am completely cool and content with my hair staying exactly the same. Curly hair will always be a novelty for people, and I have been getting compliments on how cool it looks for as long as I can remember. Plus, when I do try trends, it takes on a whole new aesthetic because now it’s modern AND curly so like a double win for me.

Don’t get me wrong, curly hair can be a total pain, adding on an extra 15-20 minutes to every shower to make sure it is properly conditioned and hydrated; not to mention getting literally everything caught in it (just this week my bat got tangled around my ponytail DURING a softball game). But, I am actually so glad that I was graced with such magnificent hair, and I hope I am able to pass this glorious trainwreck of a hairdo onto whatever future offspring I may procure.
