Oscar Predictions—We are into the season!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Kenyon chapter.

Here is my full list of Oscar predictions! We are entering the season. Get ready! I will be seeing a ton of these movies in the coming couple months as they get wide releases in the theatre. Can’t wait to share my thoughts with you on this!

Best Picture

  1. La La Land (Release date: December 2nd, 2016)

*Yes! This is a musical-comedy that is a contender to WIN Best Picture and brings me so much joy.

  1. (tie) Fences (Release date: December 16, 2016) and Manchester by the Sea (Release date: November 18, 2016)

  2. Silence (Release date: November 2016)

  3. (tie) Moonlight (Release date: October 26, 2016) and Lion (Release date: November 25, 2016)

  4. Loving (Release date: November 4, 2016)

—————————————————————————————————–

  1. Arrival (Release date: November 11, 2016)

  2. Jackie (Release date: December 2, 2016)

  3. Sully (In theatres now)

  4. Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk (Release date: November 11, 2016)

*This film got negative reviews due to Ang Lee’s choice of frame rate that makes the characters look like 3D generated images instead of real people.

  1. Hidden Figures (Release date: January 17, 2017)

  2. 20th Century Women (Release date: October 8, 2016)

  3. Hacksaw Ridge (Release date: November 4, 2016)

  4. Hell or High Water (Release date: Already in theatres)

  5. (tie) Birth of a Nation (Release date: October 7, 2016) and Nocturnal Animals (November 23, 2016)

*I think there is no way Birth of a Nation gets any nominations, except maybe for acting awards that don’t involve Nate Parker. I don’t see the Academy wanting to promote controversy during this season.

  1. Passengers (Release date: December 21, 2016)

*I see this film more as a money-maker rather than a serious Oscar contender.

  1. Allied (Release date: November 23, 2016)

  10. Jeremy Renner for Arrival

  11. Tracy Letts for Indignation

Best Supporting Actress

  1. Viola Davis for Fences

*So the producers of Fences submitted her for the SAG Awards in this community, so it’s likely she will end up in this category for the Oscars. And she’s the queen, so…

  1. Naomie Harris for Moonlight

  2. Michelle Williams for Manchester by the Sea

  3. Nicole Kidman for Lion

  4. Greta Gerwig for 20th Century Women

*I hope it is finally her time for a nomination! She has been doing a lot of good work, but it has been for smaller producing companies which don’t get enough attention from the Academy.

Final thoughts: I will die if La La Land gets a bunch of nominations; musicals and comedies are so so overlooked by these major award academies. So that’s very exciting for me. I also like that we are seeing more minorities represented in the acting and directing categories. These predictions are also marked by a younger generation of actors and directors, which is also quite exciting.

What do you think of my predictions? Let me know in the comments!

Mackenna is a senior who loves all things theatrical, a good cup of green tea, good music, good movies, and all the dogs. Oh, and would give up her humanity if given to opportunity to live as a baby bear.
