Introducing the Megabed

Are you and your roommate looking to take your friendship to the next level? Trying to find a new layout for your drab dorm room? Look no further than MEGABED. Megabed is a king sized bed created by combining two dorm room beds. It’s typically seen when someone has a dingle (one person living in a double), but it can also be done with two roommates in a double. My roommate, Becca, and I have had a megabed since parents weekend last fall, and it has been incredible.

We first got the idea for megabed from our friend Emma, who lives in Bushnell. Since the Bushnell rooms are so small, Emma and her roommate decided to save space by combining their beds. After spending many an afternoon napping in Emma’s megabed, Becca and I decided that we had to try it for ourselves.

Intrigued? Here are the top five reasons why megabed will be the best decision you ever make:

1. You will have way more space to spread out at night.

Becca and I both still have our own sheets and comforters, but something about having a larger bed to lie in makes one feel much less claustrophobic at night, and it reminds me more of my bed at home than a dorm room mattress.

2. Late night conversations will feel much less strained.

Sometimes, after a long day, it’s just really nice to decompress before you go to bed. With megabed, it’s much easier to just roll over and talk to each other rather than yelling across the room. Additionally, it’s really convenient to pass your phone to your roommate when you find a super adorable video of a puppy that she NEEDS to see.

3. Your room will automatically feel more homey.

Becca and I recently invested in a king-size quilt to go over both of our beds, and when it’s on, it really looks like our room could be a bedroom in a house or an apartment. Oftentimes dorm rooms can feel very sterile and aloof, but megabed adds a charming touch that really makes the room more pleasant and comforting to come back to.

4. There is a lot more space to hangout with friends.

Not only do we have more floor space with megabed, but we also have a lot of space to sit on the bed. I think that typically in dorm rooms, there isn’t a lot of sitting room, but with megabed, we often have friends over, and we’ll all just lay around on the bed. This makes for great netflix time, and we’ve also been known to play a rowdy game of cards on megabed too.

5. You can have slumber parties!

Becca and I have joked that you could fit five people across megabed, and although you’d be packed in like sardines, it’s definitely true. Group naps on megabed are truly wonderful.

I love our megabed, and I think that it’s one of my favorite things about our room. It has transformed our living space from a disjointed dorm room into a little home that we love to come back to. On Saturday afternoons, there really is nothing better than turning on the christmas lights and curling up on megabed to watch a movie. So, if you and your roommate are looking to change things up, I would definitely recommend that you try out megabed! You won’t be disappointed.
