Ohio is currently ranked as number four in the nation for sex trafficking. In a report done by Ohio Human Trafficking Task Force in 2017, there were more than 300 people in the state that were victims to human trafficking. But why does Ohio have such a high rate of sex trafficking? It’s all due to major highways located in Ohio, as well as a large number of strip clubs in the state.
So what is sex trafficking? It’s when some forces another person into a commercial sex act. A commercial sex act can be anywhere from pornography and sex in exchange for any form of money, drugs, housing or food.
In recent news there has been an increase in sex trafficking at Belden Village Mall, which is only a short 30-minute drive to Kent State. The area around the mall including The Strip was among a list of top three locations for escort advertisements.
So with all this being said, let’s talk about ways you can keep yourself safe when walking alone whether it be day or night.
Alerting someone of your whereabouts
This could be just a quick call to your roommate, significant other or your parents before you leave. Just letting them know where you’re at, what time it is that you’re leaving and you’re estimated arrival time to your destination. This is important so if something happens to you someone has spoken to you last and knows where you were and at what time.
Be alert of your surroundings
Staying cautious of the people around you and making sure you know what’s happening in your area is a good tip. So don’t be blasting music when you’re walking alone and can’t hear anyone coming up to you. This also includes talking on the phone with someone for long periods, you need to stay alert at all times.
Know your options for being safe
If you’re stuck leaving class late at night and have a long trek back to your car or dorm you can always contact campus security for an escort. Call 330-672-7004 for a KSU escort to walk you to safety.
Carry your keys with you at all times
If you’re walking to your car or apartment, make sure to have your keys in your hands so you can have easy access to getting into your car and house. I like to keep them inbetween my fingers; they can work as a good defense mechanism if you have someone approach you.
Set a place to meet friends
If you’re out at a bar or a frat party with your friends, make sure to set a key place to meet them if you happen to get separated and can’t find anyone you know or trust. This way you all know where to meet and you don’t have to worry about going home alone.
