Five ways to feel better when sick at college

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Kent State chapter.

It’s that time of year; No matter how hard you try there is a good chance you will wind up sick. Between shared bathrooms, having a roommate and just going to class, germs spread fast. If being sick is not bad enough, being away from home, your own bed and your mom just makes everything worse. As adults we have to continue with our daily lives despite how much we just want to crawl up in a ball with a box of tissues and Netflix. While being sick sucks, one of the only things we can do is let the cold run its course. However, there are things we can do to make ourselves feel better.

1. Stock up

As soon as you feel that dreaded feeling of something ill coming on, go to store and stock up on necessary items like tissues, medicine and soup. This saves you from having to exert extra energy on those few days where you feel the worst.

2. Take it easy

While you may still have to go to work and class, skipping out on non-important things like meetings and a workout allow for more time relaxing and catching up on sleep. Who doesn’t love an excuse to sleep and catch up on “Pretty Little Liars”?

3. Stay hydrated

Sometimes the thought of eating or drinking anything when your throat hurts just makes you want to cry, but it is important to stay hydrated in order to lead you to recovery. Trying to stick to water is best. However, it is important to drink what sounds best to you, whether that is hot tea, Gatorade, water or even 7-up just be sure to include some water throughout the day.

4. Take medicine

Being sick is miserable and can make you feel like death. That’s why cold medicines were invented. Taking medicine can make getting through your day a lot easier, or if you’re not a fan of taking medicine using items like cough drops and neti-pots can make you feel better without feeling like you are having to drug yourself up.

5. Know when to take a day off

Sometimes when you’re sick its best to just stay in bed and rest all day. You are the only person who is able to determine when this needs to happen, but sometimes it is best to rest and avoid getting others sick as well. It is also important to know when to seek medical attention.

These tips will help you feel better when you are sick, but it is important to remember to wash your hands, eat healthy and keep your living area clean in order to prevent yourself from getting sick.
