Coping with burnout

The fall season is finally here. There are so many things to look forward to, like Halloween and Thanksgiving. Winter break is quickly approaching and will be here before we know it. Even though all these exciting things are coming, we still have to worry about schoolwork. Midterms have recently come to an end, and I know a lot of us were studying and trying hard to keep those grades up.

Working hard is good, but it can lead to exhaustion. During this time of year, the workload tends to pile up, and I am getting to a point where I feel unmotivated to do just about anything. This can lead to not being fully confident in your work. However, there are a few things that I do to relax but also stay productive during academic burnout.

Firstly, it is really important to prioritize self-care. It is okay to take a break. I often tell myself that I can take a break once I get it all done. However, there will always be more work to be done. It is necessary to make time for ourselves and not treat it like an afterthought. I don’t mean doing nothing and staring at your phone for hours. Take this time to catch up on sleep or to eat a meal that is actually nutritious. This will help you come back stronger than ever, and you can get back on track.

I also think it is really good to take a step back from your work and do something that you really enjoy. Taking part in hobbies like drawing or journaling can be really healing. My favorite thing to do is read. I love being able to escape my world for a bit and enter one that is totally different from my own. Everything else in my life goes silent and I can fully immerse myself in the book. It can be very good for your mental health to remember the things that bring you happiness. Academics and your productivity level are not the only things life has to offer.

Exercise can be relaxing, too. I am not a huge gym goer or anything, but I do really enjoy walking. Going outside and surrounding myself with nature is very helpful. It is especially beautiful this time of year. It allows me to have a clear head and to disconnect from the stress in my life. Recently, my friends and I went on a hike in Cuyahoga Falls and it was extremely healing. Not only was I connecting with the outside world, but I was doing it with the people I love. Even just a walk around campus can be fulfilling.

There are ways to stay productive, but also help with the burnout you are experiencing. Try to break down your work and take breaks so it doesn’t get so hard. Make a schedule so things don’t keep piling up. You can still be productive, but do not forget to take care of your health. Whether that is physically by getting more sleep or mentally by sitting down and reading a good book. You will end up doing better in the long run.
