Most college students are all too familiar with the freshman 15. Being a full time student and staying in shape is quite difficult with papers and exams due the same week and easy, cheap meals often taking precedence over healthy, expensive ones. However, the following breakfast recipe can save you a few bucks without making you gain any extra pounds.

There is nothing better than starting the day with a good cup of coffee and some pancakes. Regular pancakes, however, are made of unhealthy refined flour and will, undoubtedly lead to weight gain. For this healthy recipe, you only need five inexpensive ingredients that can be found at any supermarket.

Ingredients:

  • 2 egg whites
  • ¼ cup of old fashion oats
  • 1 teaspoon of Chia seeds
  • 1 banana
  • Dash of cinnamon

After gathering these ingredients, put them into the blender for at least ten or twenty seconds. The mixture will become creamy, almost as if they were regular pancakes. Next cook the mixture in a pan by dividing it into medium portions, just like flour pancakes. For those of us with a sugar tooth, topping your pancakes with your favorite fruit or peanut putter can add an extra pizzazz!

Unlike a slice of pizza, this recipe is only 300 calories of protein, and healthy carbohydrates full of fiber. Both oats and Chia seeds are rich in fiber and will boost your metabolism for a healthy weight loss. Adding fruit also gives you enough energy to start the day right!

According to a recent study published in Frontiers Human Neuroscience, breakfast consumption is associated with improved academic performance and other positive outcomes, so having a nutritious breakfast will help you stay in shape and keep you focused in class. Now there’s no excuse to avoid breakfast!
