Halloween on a Budget: A Student-Friendly Guide

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at KCL chapter.

With Halloween just around the corner, you may have started to consider throwing an epic hall party! However, as a student, the question of budgeting is unavoidable, so how do you get that EPIC party without completely rinsing your wallet? Well we’ve got you covered with a few ideas for a money-friendly party with simple yet spooky decorations as well as some DIY’s to get you all creative and ready to celebrate the 31st with success!

Decorations:

1) Stick to a colour scheme:

Sticking to a colour scheme of about two or three colours will make the party look tasteful and well put together. If you want to keep it traditional, stick to mainly black, orange, green and purple. Decorate the dining table with a simple black table cloth, for example, then lay some orange plastic plates and cups, then finish the look with green napkins. This is both budget-friendly as well as a great idea to prove a strong, spooky aesthetic.

2) Pumpkins are a must!

You can find a pumpkin anywhere, and you can even find small ones if you’re on a tight budget. Carving pumpkins is always a fun and creative way to get everyone involved, but of course a cheaper and easier option is to use some sharpies to quickly draw and colour in any pumpkin! If you’re also very last minute, just buy some oranges from your local market and draw faces on them instead, a quick fix with a sweet reward!

3) Finishing touches

To complete the decorations for your perfect party, add some bunting which you can DIY. All you need is some paper or card, some sellotape and scissors, paint or colourful markers and finally some string. Make a ‘Happy Halloween’ banner and stick it wherever you like! You can even add some glow in the dark stickers on windows, which you can find on amazon. Then finally, you can place inexpensive tea lights all around, to complete the visual ~ambiance~.

The Mood:

1) Your party needs a great Halloween playlist!

A party isn’t a great party without some music, so pick some tunes like M.J’s ‘Thriller’ or Kanye’s ‘Monster’, create a playlist and blast them on the 31st. Or if you want a playlist already made, with timeless favourites, we’ve got you. Check out Spotify’s Halloween Playlist here, it has all the tracks you could need for a perfect night!

2) Play some games!

You always need some games to keep things fun and interesting for all, so play traditional beer pong but draw some eyeballs on the balls and make sure the cups keep in with your colour scheme (purple would look cool!). You can even play your childhood games like Apple Bobbing!

Food and Drink:

1) DIY potion drinks!

To make all your drinks look cool and spooky, add dry ice to create a foggy effect. Just don’t forget to use tongs when handling the dry ice and tell your guests not to drink the cubes.

2) Add eyeballs to everything.

Get to your local market, buy some lychees and blueberries and then when you get home peel the lychees and pop the blueberry into the middle for a slimy, ugly and scary eye! Pop that into any drink and then you successfully spookified your beverage! Oh, and don’t forget funky straws!

3) Festive Desserts are a must!

Of course, you don’t have to a throw a party, another great option is turning on any Tim Burton movie, grabbing some popcorn and enjoying a quiet, spooky night in.
