Sometimes you just need to unwind and de-stress. And sometimes the best way to do that is by making a bowl of popcorn, putting on some comfy clothes, sitting back and relaxing in front of a fun TV show that will take you away from real life for a while. Here are five hilarious comedies to help you do that:

1. Schitt’s Creek

This show is absolutely perfect for unwinding. If the fact that it completely swept the Emmys this year doesn’t make you want to watch Schitt’s Creek, then let me make the case for it. The story follows a rich family that suddenly loses all its money and ends up in a tiny town in the middle of nowhere. Johnny, Moira, David and Alexis are forced to adapt to their new lifestyle and we watch them as at first they struggle but then slowly begin to grow and create a place for themselves in the community. The plot may sound familiar, but this show completely subverts all expectations of the genre. The characters are fantastic and the casting is flawless. It’s joyful, hysterical and has a lot of heart – what more could you ask for?

2. New Girl

This may be an unpopular opinion but I will forever argue that this show is far superior to Friends. The comparison gets thrown around a lot because New Girl is also about the trials and tribulations of a group of friends who live together, but this 2011 sitcom just does it better than Friends did. The characters are so funny, quirky and relatable, the writing is memorable and the convoluted situations that Jess, Nick, Winston and Schmitt manage to get themselves into are always entertaining to watch.

3. Veep

Not enough people are watching this show! It is an astonishingly well executed political satire that follows Selina Meyer, the fictional Vice President of the United States, and her team as they navigate the political scene in Washington, D.C. The show’s dark comedy makes it very different to the other shows on this list, but it will have you laughing out loud every two minutes. The performances are excellent and the overall tone is flawless.

4. Parks and Recreation

Parks and Rec is one of the most wholesome and entertaining shows out there. It is constantly funny and gets better and better as the seasons progress. The show follows the everyday lives of Leslie Knope and her colleagues at the chaotic Parks and Recreation department in Pawnee, Indiana. This show has created many memorable lines and characters that are a testament to its rewatchability and endurance in pop culture. This show never disappoints and watching it is a delight.

5. The Office

This sitcom is a classic so I won’t even bother giving you a run down of what it’s about (an office). Whether you prefer the UK or US version, it’s always a fun show to watch when you just need a break. It’s hilarious, it’s iconic and most importantly, it never gets old.

Unwinding and taking some time for yourself is so important; don’t forget to give yourself a break once in a while.
