Things to do in Providence Under 21

Because there’s so much more than you think.

Living in Providence, RI as a college student has definitely been an extremely fun way to start off adulthood. Even though Providence is known for amazing restaurants and bars, the fun doesn’t have to be restricted by an age limit. Here’s a list of some of my favorite things to do in Providence while being under 21! 

Two of my all-time favorite places to keep the fun alive without having to show an ID or break the bank are definitely Snookers and the Dusty Planet. A fun night out where you can play endless pool or battle it out on the mini golf course. If you’re in search of more of an adrenaline rush, R1 Karting just outside Providence in Johnston, RI is an amazing spot to race your friends on the track! Level 99 in the Providence Place Mall is another great outing with endless games, food, and drinks right in the heart of the city! Right across the street from the mall, Providence hosts one of the coolest events, WaterFire. You get the opportunity to enjoy a free show with music, lights, boats, and of course, fire. The best part is, it’s completely free! 

Another budget-friendly attraction that’s walking distance from Downtown is the RISD Museum. Not only is it constantly changing, highlighting students’ work, they also offers college entry discounts and has an amazing cafe to grab a bite to eat after a walk through the museum. Staying on the topic of museums, the Museum of Natural History & Planetarium located in Roger Williams Park is a great adventure just outside the city. While you’re at Roger Williams, don’t miss the Botanical Garden and the Zoo, where you can take your mind off the hustle and bustle and enjoy a calming, refreshing experience.

If you’re an outdoorsy person and are looking for something else to escape the city for a moment, India Point and Prospect Terrace are my favorite parks to take in the scenery and relax. After a long day of classes or work, it’s nice to come to a peaceful spot and enjoy the beauty of the city. Let’s say you wanted to escape Providence altogether; kayaking at Lincoln Woods Park is a fun adventure to sail away from chaos. 

Not so much of a sight seeker? Don’t worry, I have recommendations for those who like the finer things in life. My all-time favorite shop to visit in Downtown Providence has to be The Vault. They have so many unique and chic pieces to spruce up your closet. They have everything from vintage graphic tees to vintage designer bags! If you head across the street to Queen of Hearts & Modern Love, you can complete your outfit with eclectic accessories to add all the final touches! On Sundays, the Providence flea market is also a great spot to do some shopping. Whether it’s a treat for yourself or a gift from someone else, the flea market has all kinds of local vendors offering apparel, home goods, art, desserts, and so much more! Lastly, another hidden gem in Providence has to be Urban Outfitters on Thayer Street. Nestled into Brown’s campus, Urban Outfitters is the perfect stop if you need a last-minute outfit or want to have a fun girls’ day!
