Things to Balance during College

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at JMU chapter.

College comes with lots of responsibilities. Freshman year is the first time you’re (kind of) living on your own, which comes with some amazing benefits (aka no parents to nag you) but also tons of responsibilities.

Here’s a list of 5 things to balance in college that you may not realize:

  1. Getting enough sleep

Between doing work for classes and hanging out with friends it can be tough to actually get eight hours of sleep! But speaking from experience, it’s worth making sure you do put the time into your schedule to get enough sleep because your mind and body will thank you later.

2. Working out

If going to the gym isn’t a habit of yours already, college is a great time to start. Not only does it help keep off the freshman fifteen, but it’s also a great stress reliever when the semester workload starts to get tough! Just taking the time to cut out 40 minutes or so three times a week can make a difference.

3. Eating healthy

With the overwhelming amount of dining options, it’s no secret that the freshman fifteen is real. It still is all about balance though! Reward yourself with dessert every day, but still, remember to get some fruit and veggies in your diet too. Your mom will probably also remind you of this every time you call home.

4. Doing laundry

Before college, I’ll be honest- I never did my own laundry. Taking the time out to wash all your clothes, make your bed, and wait for the dryer to finish can be time-consuming, but designating one day during the week to do a load will help prevent the pile of dirty laundry from getting too big.

5. Keeping in touch with friends from home

This is super important! These people are the ones who know you best, and when you really need some good advice, they offer great outside perspectives for all that college throws at you. Be sure to pick up the phone every now and then to check on them too. Going back home for breaks wouldn’t be the same if you didn’t take out the time to keep these people in your life.
