How to Stay Calm During Spring Enrollment

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at JMU chapter.

If you’re anything like me, registration is an exciting time. Browsing through potential classes to take, figuring out what my daily schedule will look like…it’s a good time. But even if you have your dream schedule planned out, things don’t always go the way you want them to. Class enrollment can sometimes be like the Hunger Games, and the odds aren’t always in your favor. To keep yourself from freaking out when your enrollment date rolls around, here are some tips on how to stay calm during enrollment.

1. Plan ahead

Enrollment starts November 6th, but classes are posted now! Start filling that shopping cart with classes you’d like to take, because nothing is worse than trying to enroll last-minute without a plan.

2. Make multiple schedules

Everybody has their dream schedule: no 8ams, no Friday classes, plenty of time to grab coffee between classes…doesn’t get much better than that. But you should be prepared that some classes might be closed by the time you go to enroll, which can ruin your entire schedule. To avoid a freakout when this happens, make multiple potential schedules, otherwise you might be stuck trying to haul it from ISAT to Memorial in 15 minutes…which won’t go well.

3. Don’t forget your GenEds!

This is especially for you, juniors and seniors. Sometimes it’s easy to get caught up in your major classes, but you might still need to finish some GenEds! Don’t put them off – nothing is more awkward than being the only senior in a class full of freshmen.

4. Remember you need 120 credits to graduate!

Taking it easy might be tempting, but if you consistently take only 12 credits per semester (the minimum to maintain full-time status), you might fall short when it comes time to graduate.

5. Don’t always depend on RateMyProfessor

While the reviews might be helpful sometimes, it’s important to remember that anybody can write reviews on this site. I’ve even heard of some professors offering extra credit to students who positively rate them. If you really want to know what a professor is like, ask other students! You can also ask the professor for a copy of their syllabus in advance to determine their teaching style.

6. Take advantage of on-campus resources!

If your advisor is too busy to meet with you and go over your schedule, fear not! The Madison Advising Peers (MAPs) are a great alternative if you need last-minute help with any academic questions. You don’t need to make an appointment and usually won’t have to wait to talk with somebody. The MAPs general advising room is in Roop 201 and is open Mon-Thurs from 10am-5pm!
