Bare Naked Ladies – Interview with Member Jess Lussier

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at JMU chapter.

Self love and acceptance is a big part of our everyday lives, so I got together with my friend Jess to learn more about an amazing organization that promotes just that to encourage our students at JMU to accept and love themselves. Here’s what she told me about the Bare Naked Ladies:

“BNL is a club that stands for body positivity and self-love. We encourage everyone, both male and female, to love themselves, appreciate and celebrate their differences, and utilize those differences for his or her own gain. We pledge to love and speak to ourselves as we would to our best friend or family member.”

“My favorite part about BNL is the members. Everyone is so unique and special and so supportive towards everyone, no matter how far along they may be on their self-love journey. Every single meeting and event is such a safe environment for sharing and connecting and I love that.”

“At every meeting, our President makes time for an activity regarding some common theme of the meeting. So, for example, one of the meetings we were talking about learning how to let go, whether that be of an event, a person, or a place. She asked all of us to discuss and share (if we felt comfortable doing so) what we are holding onto, why we are scared to let go, and what we could potentially gain if we were to let go. Every meeting we are challenged to think about certain topics that can be daunting or uncomfortable. “

“I joined this club because I was looking for a place to excel, a place to truly learn how to love myself and others and to worry less about how I look or how others perceive me, and to focus on myself. I learned that it is not at all selfish to take time for yourself, for you cannot pour from an empty glass (something we love to say in BNL). We promote self-care like no other which is something I have always struggled with, so learning how to do that is so crucial and I’m thankful for that among many other things

All meetings, every other Monday, are open to anyone, you don’t have to pay dues!”
