Exploring JCU’s On-Campus Jobs

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at JCU chapter.

Being a college student is not easy. With numerous hours spent studying while also trying to balance participation in student organizations and a social life of some sort, it can be difficult to find the time to cram in a part-time job. Unfortunately, however, school and take-out funds need to come from somewhere. Finding a job off campus can be tiring and complicated—especially if you do not have a vehicle on campus. The shuttle only has so many stops, and it is notorious for never being on time. Luckily, there are other options. John Carroll University employs over 700 students in jobs on campus, according to the school’s website. Here are some of the on-campus job opportunities available to students:

  • Student Caller – students are employed at The Carroll Fund Student Call Center to reach out to alumni, parents, friends of the university, and potential incoming students over the phone. Students can work nights and weekends calling people to raise money for the Carroll Fund in support of scholarships and various campus resources and services. Callers must work at least two shifts per week.

  • Writing Consultant – both undergraduate and graduate students make up the staff at the JCU Writing Center (WC). In order to apply for and obtain this role, students are required to to take the EN 290 class during the Spring semester to learn more and train for the job through a practicum portion. Writing consultants help a variety of students in the WC with a plethora of assignments and written work.

  • Rec/Corbo Desk Attendant – students are able to occupy the Rec Desk outside of the gyms to allow access to students. This position is coveted based on the opportunity to work on homework while on the clock. Other employment opportunities for the Department of Recreation include lifeguard or swim instructor.

  • Library Staff – ever notice all of the student helpers available in the Grasselli Library? Students can often be spotted occupying the front desk to provide as a direct resource, or helping clean up around the building.

  • Carroll Reads Tutor – students are employed for the Center for Service and Social Action (CSSA) for the America Reads tutoring program. Tutors are trained to work with students grades K-6, and work twice a week for a total of about five hours.

  • Mail Center Worker – students are often the ones to greet you with a friendly smile when you go to pick up a package at the mail center. They are there to assist other students and to go around campus to various departments delivering mail.

  • The Cubby – this beloved spot on campus is called student-run for a reason. This on-campus job allows you to let out your inner barista and get creative making tasty coffee beverages while you get your homework done.

  • Broadcast Team Member – a broadcast team assembled on behalf of the hockey team serves to fill the roles as “camera operator, color commentary and play by play.” On JCU’s website, the Athletics Department has stated they are looking for students to fill this position to cover the season. The pay for this particular job is $50 per game.

  • Equipment Assistant – this position in the Athletics Department entails set-up and clean-up before and after football practices at Shula Stadium, as well as additional assistance for running practice. More information for this job can be found on JCU’s website on behalf of Student Enrollment and Financial Services.
