If I could go back in time to my freshman self this time last year, I would tell her to take a seat, because I have so much to tell her.
Take it easy
The beginning of college is such an exciting but also really scary time. Everything changes overnight and I remember feeling alone and like I had to have it all figured out. I feel like college is very future-oriented because a lot of us come here to transition into successful adults. For anyone who has anxiety, it is so easy to spiral when thinking about the future. My freshman year, I spent so much time worrying about the future and things beyond my control that sometimes I forgot to live in the present.Â
Going back in time, I would remind my freshman self that it always works out and she should take it easy. I would tell her to soak in the good times and be patient with herself in the bad times, because she has much more time than she thinks and it will get better. It is more than okay to take a break and relax sometimes.
DOn’t compare yourself
I wish I could tell my freshman self and any other freshman like her that everyone is on a different path and everyone’s college experience is different. My freshman year, I compared my life and my journey with others’ way too much. Whether it was my major, my career goals, my social life or my academics, I would always think about it in the context of other people I know. That is no way to live. Comparing yourself to others is so emotionally and mentally draining. It takes away your focus from what is going well in your life and what actually matters to you. I would tell my freshman self to ask herself what she really wants, like really really wants. Not what her parents want, not what she thinks is ideal, but what she actually dreams of. I would tell her to focus on achieving that and be grateful for where she is at.
Go for it!
I would also tell her to be confident and that she should never be afraid to speak her mind and go after what she wants. No one is going to hand you everything you want on a platter, you have to go for it. It is always rewarding and worth it!
Most importantly, if I could go back in time to my freshman self, I would thank her. She taught me so much about myself and despite going through so much change, she never stopped showing up and trying her best. I love her and I want to make her proud because she makes me proud.
