Ways to Stay Involved on Campus During a Global Pandemic

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois chapter.

Online school is definately not what we all imagined our college experience would be and sometimes it’s hard to imagine that we’re living in such a crazy time like this. There’s so much uncertainty with the future and what even the next day will bring, but it’s also important to make the most of every single moment. That being said, here are some ways to still feel like your a normal college student at UIUC, even though we’re currently in a global pandemic.

1. Stay Involved in Clubs and Join New Ones

For me, many of my club meetings have continued but have moved to a remote setting. In addition, recruiting events are still happening and are so much easier to stay active with. Plus, there might be some additional benefits to virtual meetings as well, like not having to wear professional clothes or running around from meeting to meeting! There are hundreds of RSO’s at UIUC and it’s super easy to find clubs that meet your interests.

2. Take Advantage of Outdoor Campus Activities

In addition, there are so many resources available that has made the weird time we’re in just a tad bit better. On campus, there have been adaptations to some in-person outdoor events held at the football stadium, ranging from movies to concerts, and are totally free for all students. If not that, there’s an awesome drive-in movie theatre that only happens to be 45 minutes away.

3. Eat at Outdoor Restaurants

Outdoor, socially distanced dining has been a lifesaver during the pandemic and it’s a great way to spend time with friends in a safe way. Almost every restaurant at UIUC has adapted to safety regulations and has created new plans to ensure that they can still serve. While the weather is still remotely nice, take advantage of eating outside while you still can!

4. Visit Japan House Garden

A very special place at UIUC is the Japan House Garden. This hidden gem is a mere mile walk from the Urbana campus area and is gorgeous. The sights and sounds are amazing and it really doesn’t feel like you’re in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois anymore. Grab some of your friends and take a much-needed theraputic walk throughout this peaceful wonderland!

Although many of us are unhappy about the current state of the world and the restrictions on school this year, it also gives you the opportunity to try some new things and visit places on UIUC’s campus you haven’t been to yet. Right now is the perfect time to stay involved on campus (or get more involved) and expand your horizons. Who knows, maybe you’ll meet new people or obtain opportunities you wouldn’t think you would’ve gotten before! Most importantly, find the things that make you feel happiest and the best version of yourself while we’re living through these uncertain times.
