Tips to Surviving Recruitment

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois chapter.

Recruitment. A stressful, yet exciting time for many girls all over the University of Illinois campus. With the kick off of recruitment last weekend, I’m sure many of you are wondering how to survive the endless rounds of small talk and booming chants. To help you make it through this season of the sorority recruitment process check out our list below!

Load up on snacks and fluids!

After experiencing the first round of open house, we all can relate to how exhausting the process can be. Talking without breaks longer than 10 minutes as well as walking all over campus can really drain your energy. To help keep your energy boosted and avoid “hangry-ness” keep lots of snacks and water in your bag! Always remember to bring some granola bars, pretzels, or whatever type of snack you like!

Make sure to bring a change of shoes!

As the recruitment process continues and events become more dressy, you might decide to throw on your favorite pair of wedges or heels. As fashionable as the shoes might be, make sure to bring some flats to walk in. Nothing is worse than being uncomfortable in what you are wearing. Bringing an extra pair of flats can help you get to each house faster and avoid unbearable blisters. So, rock your heels inside the houses and make sure to bring a pair of comfy shoes for the long walks!

Write your thoughts after every chapter!

Running from house to house for six straight hours can make all the houses begin to mesh together. By the end of the night, it might be hard to remember which chapters you really enjoyed. To help separate the houses, write down a little something about each chapter! You could even type a quick summary of the house in your phone as you walk to the next one. Just writing something small about each house will help ring a bell when it comes time for preference round.

Keep a positive attitude!

Although recruitment sometimes feels prolonged, try to always stay in a positive place! Recruitment can be a very enjoyable process too. There will be no other time in your life where you will get to meet so many people in such a short amount of time. When the days begin to seem too long always remember to put a smile on your face and think about the positives of the process. The outcome of finding a chapter where you truly feel at home is worth all of the craziness.

Hopefully these tips can help you pull through recruitment this year! Always remember to smile and have fun throughout the process. Good luck to everyone!!
