The Stages of Returning to School as Told By “New Girl”

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois chapter.

Now that we’re about one month into classes it seems as if we’re finally all settling into our new schedules for the spring semester. While on one level we’re glad to be back, on another we long for those winter break days filled with zero obligations.

So, let’s take a minute to remember. Here are the stages of returning to school that we all experience as told by “New Girl.”

Your Attitude the Day before You Leave:

You have to say goodbye to all your friends from home, your significant other, your family, and really, nothing is harder than saying goodbye to your dog. Plus, having class again is really just the icing on the cake.

Packing:

We all hate doing it. There’s never enough room in your suitcase and you hate having to put your clothes up against each other to see which are worthy of the trip and which will be left behind because honestly, you love them all equally. Except that pair of jeans. That’s your favorite pair.

The Ride Back:

Whether you take the bus, the train, your car or a friend’s, it’s the longest ride of your life and you plan on being as comfortable as possible. Here’s to hoping you don’t need to make any stops!

Unpacking:

We’ll of course procrastinate this as long as possible, but eventually, it’s gotta be done. Then, it always happens: we finally unpack and realize we forgot something.

Trying to Get on a Normal Sleep Schedule:

You didn’t realize how messed up this was until you got back to school. Getting up before 10 a.m.? No thank you. Thank God for the weekend.

Realizing You Can Drink Whenever You Want AND It’s Acceptable:

If we want a glass of wine at 11 a.m., there’s never any judgment from our roommates. In fact, most of them will join in. Thanks college.

Going out for the First Time since You’ve Been Back:

Everyone else seems to have the same idea, and the bars are packed. There’s people in your personal space, you can’t even get to the bar to order a drink and it smells. Next time, you’ll just stay at home and drink with your friends.

Slowly Becoming a Shut-In:

It’s cold out and you don’t want to leave the apartment if you don’t have to. You just slowly started to realize that you are actually close to becoming shut-ins. Does it change anything? Nope.

Ordering Amazing Campus Food:

Going from home cooked meals to having to make your own food has never gone well. In fact, most of the time it means we’re having mac & cheese for dinner. Good thing our campus has amazing food that can be delivered straight to our door.

Realizing There’s Still an Entire Semester after Syllabus Week:

And in the midst of all this acclimating, you finally realize that you still have to get through an entire semester. Fantastic.

Cheers to another semester!
