As spring approaches, there’s a new sense of happiness and excitement in the air, now that the incredibly harsh winter is over. However, there are also many viruses floating in the air and waiting to infect a college student like you. Nobody wants to have their week ruined by an illness, and many of us can’t afford to take a few days off or we’ll fall behind in our studies. As someone who has experienced what feels like every single virus that has gone around campus, I’m going to share with you some essential tips that can help prevent you from falling victim to the flu.

1. Wash Your Hands

I know it’s common sense, but during these few months, it is essential to wash your hands as if your life depends on it. We touch many objects that have a bevy of germs such as the bus, desks, door handles, etc. It’s important to either wash your hands or put hand sanitizer on after touching these things so that you have a lesser chance of getting infected. You can also help stop the spread of germs to others by doing this, and save them from getting sick as well!

2. Drink Lots of Water

Many people know you’re supposed to drink around 8 glasses of water each day, but let’s face it, not many of us drink the amount that we’re supposed to. However, water is essential to our health and is the key to fighting off diseases. By drinking the right amount of water for our bodies each day, you’ll be less likely to get sick and you’ll also reap the other possible benefits such as glowing skin and weight loss. Who doesn’t want that, right?

3. Get Enough Sleep

Sleep is a major factor in many things such as your attitude, your ability to do well in school, and most importantly your health. While it’s tempting to stay out late for multiple nights in a row or to pull an all-nighter to study, you’ll be much better off if you get a good night of sleep. When our bodies are exhausted and we don’t let them rest, we are much more susceptible to illnesses than if we were to get the rest our bodies need. Prioritize yourself and go to sleep if you’re not feeling well, and I guarantee you, you’ll be thankful you did.

4. Eat Healthy Foods

Eating healthy is much easier said than done, but it is essential when you’re trying to keep your body healthy. In times of sickness, it’s super important to load up on foods that are high in vitamins and nutrients. This means eating lots of fruit and vegetables and avoiding unhealthy processed foods. Food is the best medicine, so take care of your body through a healthy diet!

5. Disinfect Often

If you’re currently living in a dorm like me, I’m sure you’re no stranger to the viruses that seem to spread like wildfire. I would highly recommend investing in disinfectant wipes or spray and disinfecting your room at least once a week. Wipe down those doorknobs and handles, and save yourself (and your roommates) from falling victim to the flu or other viruses. You’ll thank me later!

Nobody wants to be stuck in bed for multiple days because of a virus. If you follow these tips for avoiding the flu, you’ll be much less likely to get sick and save yourself from falling behind in school!
