College is exhausting. Juggling classes, extracurriculars, friends and studying leaves us with barely any time for ourselves. These few years of college play a huge role in discovering who you are as a person. We grow and change with every heartbreak, failure and success. But between all of our responsibilities and fun events, sitting down to reflect and unwind almost never makes the cut. Reflecting and unwinding is important in maximizing our growth, and it is something you have to do by and for yourself. That’s why hanging out with yourself is something that every college student needs to learn how to do. So, where do we start?

1. Have a Spa Day

Grab those face masks that have been sitting in your drawer, put a deep conditioning treatment in your hair, light a candle, and paint your nails. Put on whatever music suits your vibes, whether it’s your favorite playlist or a pre-arranged spa/chill playlist, and let the music be an additional spa treatment for your mind and soul.

2. Do What You Have Been Wanting To Do

Go get that haircut you’ve been wanting, get a new piercing, browse around Target for room decor, go thrifting or buy a new plant — Home Depot has some really cute succulents. Going out and treating yourself is more than okay. Just remind yourself that you work hard and deserve it!

3. Indulge in Your Creativity

Everyone has creative capabilities that are unique to themselves. Writing, drawing, painting, makeup and creating outfits are just some of the many ways to have fun and be creative. The best part is, you don’t have to be good at any of them. You just have to try them out and see what you love doing.

4. Watch a “Feel-Good” Movie or Show

Netflix and Hulu are always coming out with new movies and shows to watch. Lay back and watch a rom-com or comedy to make you laugh, or catch up on your favorite show. If you’re looking to start fresh, begin watching a new series.

5. Explore a New Place

There are many places on campus that you have probably seen but never actually went into. The options are endless: Museums, art galleries, exhibits, boutiques, bookstores, and coffee shops are some. You never know what kind of inspiration you can find inside. If the weather is nice, find a trail or spot in nature to take a walk and get a breath of fresh air.

At this busy time in our lives, we somtimes tend to put effort into everything except ourselves. It’s okay to be selfish at times. You need time to take care of yourself to really figure out who you are and what you want as well as how to keep yourself physically and emotionally healthy. Hanging out with yourself doesn’t have to be boring. Relax, reflect and unwind your mind, body, and soul. It’s time to get in touch with yourself.
