Finish Strong with Self-Care and Smart Studying

It’s finally Fall Break! The moment we’ve been waiting for to unwind and relax… or dreading, as the sudden realization that finals are right around the corner sets in. A wave of anxiety consumes the plethora of thoughts composed of falling behind on studying/completing assignments, passing exams, securing internships, making time to socialize with hometown friends, and catching up with family, all in the span of seven days. How can anyone do it all while still dedicating time to focus on themselves? 

Step one: breathe

Everything cannot be done in a week; remember that before attempting to cram your weekly Google Calendar and ending up biting off more than you can chew. This is your only week off amidst the entire fall semester, and it’s okay to prioritize yourself during this time. It is safe to assume that every college student is feeling burnt out, and you’re not alone. With that in mind, it is vital to be generous in your self-care while keeping on top of coursework to finish the semester off strong. Keep reminding yourself that everything is okay, followed by deep breaths, even when things seem out of your immediate control.

Step two: Adapt to surroundings

Whether you are returning to your family home, traveling, or staying on campus during this time, take the opportunity to familiarize yourself with a setting free of active classes. Take this extra time to enhance your routine, whether splurging on a skincare item catered to your personal needs or making small adjustments to your living space so it truly reflects your personality. A minor change can make a huge difference to illuminate the sensation of control in a new but temporary lifestyle. This will optimize your living space to feel relaxed, while inviting productive natures to this space.

step three: Dedicate time to school

This is important. It is easy to get lost in the haze of having a week off from responsibilities, but they are present nonetheless. Waves of anxiety stemming from school will come, but can easily be brushed off with another doom scroll. Going back to Google Calendar, it is time to utilize the platform proactively. Instead of creating vague “all day” events for studying or starting an essay due at the end of break, schedule fixed events with specific hours to perform these tasks. This will help build self-discipline and strengthen time management for the week. 

step four: it’s okay to say no to spontaneous plans

While on break, hometown friends or family will inevitably want to spend time together. Though it’s a wonderful reminder of the great support system you have in your life, it can create an internal war over whether to allocate that time to school or nurture one’s social life. Reflecting on step three, these fixed obligations will not change; they’re non-negotiables and a commitment you’ve made to yourself. If you genuinely have the time, a spontaneous hangout can be refreshing, and you should definitely take it! Alternatively, suggest a study hangout to kill two birds with one stone!

Overall, a balanced week of self-care and academic prosperity with these four steps will curate a restorative Fall Break. Remember to be gentle with yourself. This is your first time being a college student, too. 

Hello, I am Gabriela Escutia, a senior at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. I major in Political Science with a minor in History, and am in the pre-law track. I am involved with other pre-law organizations to foster a sense of community and have a support system in the legal field. I participated in a research study with a professor to get involved in a high-academic environment while working hands-on with new and exciting work. This enhanced my ability to multitask, work efficiently, and improve communication skills with figures of authority to keep a suitable work environment.
As a first-generation student, I work part-time while being a full-time student. Though strenuous, I strive to push myself in LSAT studying with pre-law friends. I have recently been accepted to the Pathways to Success Program at UIUC, which I am excited to participate in to bolster my networking and professional skills.
My personal hobbies include reading, realistic sketching of portraits, and fashion. I consider myself a creative person inside and out.
