ESSENTIALS FOR WINTER AT ILLINOIS: A GUIDE FROM AN EXPERIENCED CHICAGOAN AND COLLEGE STUDENT

Welcome to University of Illinois’s campus, where the forecast does a sweeping 180 every single day. The only thing that stays consistent here is its winter season. Winters at Illinois are absolutely brutal, and the snow you see outside is just the beginning. Here is a guide for essentials you need to be prepared for well-below freezing temperatures, biting winds and slushy sidewalks.

A Coat of Choice

Starting with the simplest and most obvious… a coat. High school might have been different, where a simple hoodie or cute little windbreaker sufficed. However, I’m here to tell you that you will see students walking around campus with parkas down to their knees. Your coat must not only be windproof, but insulated with either down or synthetic filling.

Thermal layers

What you wear within the coat is also very important. Thermal layers such as tighter long sleeve tops or sweaters will ensure that no cold gets under your coat. It is also a good idea to invest in some thick leggings with insulated fuzz in them to wear under jeans and dresses, or on their own, so you can add more variety to your outfits.

Hats & Earmuffs

When the wind chill drops into the negatives, protecting your ears and head is non-negotiable. A thick knit beanie or insulated hat will help retain body heat, since a large amount of heat escapes from your head. If hats aren’t your style, earmuffs are a great alternative and still provide strong protection against frostbite-level winds. Either way, covering your ears will make walking to class far more bearable.

Scarfs

A scarf may seem like an accessory, but in Illinois winters, it becomes a necessity. Strong winds cut straight through exposed skin, especially around your neck and face. A thick scarf helps trap warmth and can be pulled up to cover your mouth and nose on especially brutal days. This small addition can make a massive difference in how tolerable the weather feels.

Gloves & mittens

Numb fingers are not only uncomfortable, but they also make it nearly impossible to text and carry items. Investing in insulated, waterproof gloves or mittens is essential for daily campus life. Mittens retain heat better, while gloves allow more flexibility, so the best option depends on your individual needs.

Boots In The Snow

Winter Boots (NOT UGGS!!)

Snow, ice and slush are unavoidable during Illinois winters, and your footwear can make or break your day. Boots should be waterproof, insulated and have strong traction to prevent slipping on icy sidewalks. UGGs and other soft material boots may be cute, but they absorb water quickly and become frozen and uncomfortable. A solid pair of winter boots will keep your feet dry while navigating campus.

To protect from dry air

Beyond just clothing items, the dry air in Illinois will cause your skin to need a little extra help. Making sure you have a good oil-free moisturizer and moisturizing lip balm on hand will help with cracked and irritated skin.

Using this list to pack for school, you should be more than prepared to take on the winters here in Illinois. Instead of dreading the walking and shivering, you’ll anticipate seeing the snowy campus while bundled up in your unique set of winter gear.
