6 Easy Ways to Celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness Month

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois chapter.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month! Here are six easy ways to help fight and raise awareness for breast cancer that can easily fit into any college student’s schedule.

1. Attend or Host a Charitable Event

Many campus clubs and groups host events that donate the proceeds to charities working to cure breast cancer. This is an easy way to contribute to Breast Cancer Awareness Month while at the same time having fun. Keep an eye out for posters, flyers, and Facebook events being hosted, as well as booths on the Quad raising money for breast cancer (bonus: you might get a yummy snack in exchange for a donation!). If you’re in a leadership position for an organization, consider hosting a charitable event or raising money internally. Every little bit counts!

2. Wear a Pink Ribbon

A small pink ribbon is the easiest way to show your support for the the fight against breast cancer. It is widely known that pink is the color assigned to represent breast cancer awareness. Pick up some thin pink ribbon and safety pins, and make enough to give to your friends, or even members of campus groups you belong to. Proudly pin your pink ribbon to your jacket or backpack!

3. Show Appreciation to Survivors & Patients

It is safe to say that a majority of people have someone in their lives who has been affected by breast cancer in some way. Spread the love and empowerment of Breast Cancer Awareness Month by showing someone you’re thinking of these people. Make a list of any people you know who are currently fighting breast cancer or are survivors of breast cancer, and send them a thoughtful card or email, give them a call, or even message them via text or Facebook! If you don’t know anyone who has been affected by breast cancer, ask your friends and family for people they know.

4. Practice Self-Care

Prevention and self-awareness are key in the fight against breast cancer. Take some time this month to learn how to do a self breast examination, and make an effort to do it regularly! It may be awkward, but it will pay off in the long run for your health.

5. Buy from Charitable Brands

Many clothing brands sell special pieces during the month of October that promise to donate a portion of the sale to a breast cancer charity. Before buying, be sure to ask yourself which charity is being supported, and exactly how much money is being donated by asking these questions. Some great brands to buy from that are serious about donating include Ivory Ella, Aerie, Alex and Ani, Ulta, and S’well.

6. Donate!

If you just have too much to juggle and can’t find the time to do any of these this October, donating is without a doubt the way to go. All it takes is a few clicks and a few dollars to make a difference! Some great breast cancer charities to donate to include Bright Pink, Breast Cancer Research Foundation, National Breast Cancer Coalition Fund, and Breast Cancer Prevention Partners.
