5 Indicators Your Significant Other Respects You

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois chapter.

Most people in a relationship hope to maintain a harmonious, mutually-respectful liking for one another. When the honeymoon phase is over, it may become difficult to step back and decide whether you are still being treated the way you should be. Below I have listed a few signs that indicate your significant other respects you!

1. They pay attention.

Nothing feels worse than being ignored when you talk. Note how your partner observes your behaviors. Do they notice your likes and dislikes? More specifically, pay attention to how they react when you are unhappy with a situation. Your significant other should respect and work to avoid repeating an action that causes you unhappiness.

2. They introduce you to their inner circle.

The first time meeting parents can be worrisome, but once you cross that bridge it is time to form friendships with their pals. Being embarrassed to introduce you to their friend group is a red flag for future trouble. If there is a reason for this, communicate with your partner and voice your concerns.

3. They make you smile.

Often, people forget that small gestures can carry long-term effects. You do not need to go out of your way to buy presents and consistently go on dates, but a partner who respects you will want to see you smile. Whether it is a cute goodnight text or bringing you your favorite candy after midterms, a smile is one of the best compliments!

4. They go out of their way to make sure you are comfortable.

By prioritizing comfort, respect is developed with reason. Being high maintenance may cause a misunderstanding between you and your partner; however, it is important to keep in mind that effort should be considered. It is rewarding when both people involved work to maintain a healthy, cooperative relationship.

5. They enjoy you, for you.

Whether you want to wear makeup or gel in your hair, your partner should want to be with you because of who you are as a person. How you make them feel is the most important aspect in a relationship, and the good should outweigh the bad. You are unique and special, and so are they; if one of you does not enjoy the situation at hand, it may be time for a conversation to address this. Otherwise, love feels easy when it is with the right person!

Overall, relationships can be difficult to maintain during college years. Regardless of who you are, everyone is loved by someone and eventually you will find the right person for you. Respect goes a long way, and the rewards will be worth it!
