Decorating your room to look at artsy as the rooms you see on Pinterest and Tumblr can seem easy, but when you’re standing in your bare room thinking of decoration ideas, it can be hard to know where to start. Here are five easy room decorations for your apartment or dorm that will spice up your living space:

1. Lights

String lights have become a popular room decoration, but other types of lights can also aesthetically personalize your space. Buy a traditional floor lamp to make your room more modern and fancy, or try and shelf floor lamp to maximize your space by placing books or other items on the shelves. The rice paper lamp is another cozy lighting that comes in different forms: floor, table or lantern lamps. Rock crystal lamps are also another trendy type of mood light.

2. Fake plants

Real plants may be fun to take care of at first, but with your busy college schedule, keeping them alive and healthy can become difficult. Instead, buy fake plants and put them on your shelves or desk to liven up your room. Wall and floor plants also make good decorations. You don’t have to worry about how realistic they’ll look — many imitation plants nowadays are made to look pretty realistic.

3. Photo wall

Print photos from Shutterfly or your local Walgreens and stick them on one wall. If you want to take this a step further, create a color scheme that matches your room. For example, if you have a white, pink and gray theme, print pictures that have those shades in them. Not only will this establish an artsy aesthetic, it will also remind you of the memories you made in the photos whenever you look at them. You can put the photos in picture frames or stick them on bare — both work!

4. Tapestry or poster

A big tapestry or posters can make an empty room look full. Again, this works best if you match them to your room’s color scheme. This is an easy and affordable way to decorate your room and will take minimal effort to put up. Be careful not to overdo it, however, because putting up too many posters or more than one tapestry can actually make your room look cluttered.

5. Wall shelves

Wall shelves are a good addition and can also help you use your space more efficiently. You can put books, more decorations — such as fake plants — or hang string lights across the shelves to incorporate more lighting on your walls. These come in different styles, such as in the honeycomb, square or traditional ledge shapes. They are harder to put up than tapestries or photos, but once you have it hung, your room will definitely look nicer.

Happy decorating!
