This year I have been fortunate enough to live in an apartment with three other girls. Of course when you get that many girls in the same space, everything is not always going to be perfect. However, there are things that we do to prevent problems among us and enjoy each other’s company more.

Along with putting a high level of importance on communication and organization, my roommates and I have started to plan regular dinners together. Whether it is once a week or once a month, it is something that we think is important to keep doing throughout our time living together. We each put dinner ideas into a little mason jar and will pull one out randomly when we have time to cook together. I really enjoy this tradition for a couple of different reasons. The biggest reason is because we all enjoy cooking (and eating for that matter.) By being able to do something that we like together we can create a stronger friendship with each other. This eases tension in the apartment and allows us to get to know each other below the surface level.

I have a very diverse group of roommates which makes for a wide variety of entrees. This is another huge reason as to why I enjoy cooking together so much because I have been able to try new foods and learn how to cook things that I wouldn’t have before. I used to consider myself a picky eater but I am starting to realize it was just because I was scared to try new things.

I encourage all of you to start a tradition with your roommates and it doesn’t have to be cooking together, it could be craft nights, game nights, walking in the park etc. You will be surprised by how much you have to learn from each other.
