I have almost completed another trip around the sun, my 21st one to be exact. Everyone knows that day that comes around once a year when all the attention is on you. Some of us look forward to it, while others dread it. I think the older we get, the more we will dread it. However, on the bright side, each time we celebrate our birthdays we are a little wiser than we were the year before. I believe this is the greatest gift that we receive. Whether you want to grow up or not, the universe will not stop and wait for you so you might as well embrace it.

When we are little kids, birthdays seem so exciting and fun. You get presents and cake and everyone sings to you. You do not actually grasp the concept of getting older until you’re about to turn 21 and you start to feel like there is nothing to look forward to after this. I have been very emotional about my birthday this year because I don’t even know how to feel. I am obviously excited, but I also wish I was more established in my life. There are people who are 21 and own their own businesses or their own houses. It is extremely hard for me to not get caught up in wishing I were somewhere that I am not and while there is always a silver lining, it is not always clear to see.

As I have been sitting here trying to collect my thoughts about this being ‘my last enjoyable birthday’, I realized that I am being dramatic. Every birthday is as enjoyable as you make it. If you dread getting older than you are going to hate your birthday. But if you look at it in a different way it could be like an annual level up. Think about it, each year when your birthday comes around it is like an opportunity to evaluate how far you’ve come since the year before. You can even make it like a challenge and try to see how many things you can accomplish before your next birthday.

Our 20s are when we build a solid foundation for our future, these years should be empowering and influential. Most importantly, they should be enjoyable and not just the first few years either. We are still so young we have to stop stressing about getting old and just live. Let the universe guide you to your dreams.
