Activities to Enjoy Alone

In recent days, we often hear the term “digital-detox”, which refers to taking a break from social media for a few days. Basically, we all have a sense that being on social media 24/7 isn’t great. However, living in a capitalist, consumerist culture can make pursuing other activities feel overwhelming and cost-prohibitive. To achieve this, the article includes recommendations for activities that are not on your phone, relatively inexpensive, and, most importantly, enjoyable!

Going on walks

This might seem vague or even strange to some, but going outside and simply walking around without overthinking can be a stress-relieving, refreshing, and genuinely good form of exercise. Personally, I love discovering new parks around my neighbourhood and walking around to take pictures. Although it’s not walking, sometimes bringing your book to read on the bench can be just as enjoyable!

colouring

Colouring may seem like a child’s activity, but it also brings so much joy to adults! Colouring enables our brains to relax and detach from all the chaotic surroundings. There are things like “colour by numbers”, which implies a colouring book that already tells you which colour to use in each part of the picture, so that you don’t have to worry about which colour to choose. Either way, the feeling of using your own hands to create something is quite exceptional!

Scrapbooking

Similar to colouring, it’s also a hands-on activity! Scrapbooking is fun because you get to reflect on old memories and make a collage of them in the way you like! Of course, looking back at old pictures on your phone can also be nice. But there’s something about being able to look at them tangibly, plus, you can preserve them for a long period of time as well!

cooking/baking

This is a relatively ordinary activity, but it’s definitely something everyone should try! Not only is it fun to eat yummy food, but by participating in the process of buying groceries, measuring ingredients, cutting, boiling, baking, etc., you have a more intimate relationship with food, which allows you to appreciate what goes inside your body. As a result, not only is it a fun activity, but it’s also a way to live with more intention!

Enjoying alone time can be nourishing for your soul because it allows you to live with a slower, softer flow. Although there are many more activities to try out, I hope this article gives a hint of something you can try! Hobbies and activities do not have a definitive answer, and every individual has their own way of having fun. The next time you feel like you have nothing to do, try looking for things near you; the most magical experience might just be waiting in front of you!
