With the cold weather setting in and the winter season quickly approaching, it can be easy to fall into a winter slump. The winter blues, or seasonal depression, is common amongst many individuals. This season can make it difficult to find enjoyment in usual daily activities and can cause a lack of motivation. While this slump is difficult to avoid for some people, there are practices that can make this time of year less cloudy for your mind. Here are eight tips I find beneficial for the winter blues season.
1. Go Outside
Staying cooped up inside can often worsen the winter blues. Going for a 10 minute walk or simply standing outside to take in some fresh air can help relieve stress and clear the mind of any cloudiness.
2. move your body
Moving your body is a great way to take your mind away from stressors or negative emotions. From weight lifting, strength training, dance, pilates, yoga and even stretching, there are endless possibilities for ways to get your body moving. A simple 10 to 15 minutes of moving around can often help with motivation and clear your head.
3. Get good sleep
Allowing your body and mind to rest when you feel stressed is essential. Getting enough sleep and having a strong sleep schedule can help to feel more organized and balanced. Ultimately, listen to what your body and mind needs and find time to rest that works best for your schedule.
4. Self-care
Practicing self-care can be revitalizing and refreshing. Whether it’s doing your skin care routine, taking an everything shower, trying a new hairstyle or painting your nails, taking time to pour into your self-care is a great way to ease the mind.
5. Spend time with friends and family
Surrounding yourself by the people who make you happy, uplift you and make you feel loved is a great way to get out of a slump. Doing a fun activity in a group, having a game night with family or simply talking to your best friend can often lift your mood.
6. Find a new hobby
Picking up a new hobby is a great way to occupy your downtime. Sometimes we need to keep ourselves busy and a new hobby is the perfect, fun way to do so. This may even lead to a new found passion.
7. Journal or meditate
Sometimes it’s difficult to talk to others when in a winter slump. If personal time is more beneficial to you, meditating or journaling is a great personal experience that can help you reflect and clear your head. To help with focus, turn on calming music, your favorite song or try these practices in silence.
8. Do an enjoyable at-home activity
There are many enjoyable activities that can be done from the comfort of your home. Watch an old show or movie, read a book, color, bake or complete a puzzle. Doing simple activities at home can often bring comfort and joy during the winter blues.
While I am no professional, these are some tips and habits that have personally helped me many times with my yearly winter blues. Keep a positive mindset and maintain healthy and enjoyable habits during this season. Wishing you a slump-free winter and happy holiday season.
