Why It’s Okay to Plan Your Wedding When You’re 20 and Single

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Hofstra chapter.

Almost every girl has a dream to get married someday. We all have this big idea of something lush and extravagant. If you don’t feel this way, then power to you, because I can’t stop thinking about the day I look up to the one I love and say “I do.”

I’m not in a rush to get married. I still have college to get through, and I still have to look forward to the real world with a steady job. I know I need to focus on myself first, then the rest will follow. But this doesn’t mean I’m not allowed to think about weddings. Yeah, I’m 20, but I have plans.

I always loved the idea of weddings; the venues, the receptions, the vows, the dress! Everyone puts their own spin on it, which is nice to have, because you can make your wedding your own. At the age 0f 20, I can confidently say there are parts and qualities of me that I grew up with and have not changed. I want those aspects to play a role in my wedding.

I would also like to blame (thank) all the wedding-related shows I have watched to make me love weddings that much stronger. They have embedded ideas in my mind. “Say Yes to the Dress” has given me a pretty vivid image of what I want in a dress (3/4 lace sleeves off the shoulder with an open back) and “Four Weddings” have presented me with lots of fun reception ideas (mac and cheese bar, anyone?) and has also given me beautiful venues to consider.

Whether you’re obsessed with wedding shows (like I am) or not, and regardless of if you know what color napkins you want at the dinner tables, you deserve the perfect wedding. So go create your wedding binder with multiple alternative wedding ceremonies (Monica Geller from Friends knows what I mean)! It’s okay to plan now, it’ll be that more perfect for when you walk down the aisle with the perfect person
