Tune-In Tuesday: Zayn Malik, Pillow Talk

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Hofstra chapter.
It happened. The rumor was true. Zayn Malik, after divorcing One Direction, started creating his own music. And just last week, he released his first single, “Pillow Talk.”
Truth be told, I actually like the song, and I almost hate myself for it. Yes, I am the bitter One Direction fan who still dislikes the fact they’re not making music together anymore. People have told me their opinions on the song, and it’s pretty split. People are like me in saying they hate loving the song, and the others say they think it’s not a quality song. The tune is pretty catchy. Slow, smooth, and not going to lie, pretty sensual. If you like that kind of stuff, I’d definitely listen to it. Can you picture Zayn, the “Bradford Bad Boy,” singing a sexual song? Actually, yes you probably can. It’s basically a song about talking in between the sheets, and what you’re doing whilst in the bed. AKA, the name “pillow talk.” I don’t know about you, but I kind of like slow dancing in my room to it, since I’m no were near what the song intends. But I have no shame in that. So dance on, single girls! What I’m not too keen on is the music video. It features Malik’s current girlfriend, the beautiful GiGi Hadid, but everything about it is just strange. There are a lot of psychedelic features to it. Crazy colors and forms of figures. The lighting gets crazy, and Zayn looks pretty funky in a lost of the scenes. My least favorite part was at the end, where both started crying blood. It was eerie, and there wasn’t really a point to it. The only part that made sense was the minimal kissing GiGi and Zayn had.
But the beauty of music is that you do not need to watch a music video to enjoy the song. That’s what I’ve been doing with this song. I am very eager to see what else Zayn has in store for us. Let’s see how it compares to his old band!
To be continued…
