As the holiday season rapidly approaches, the time to make heartfelt, handmade decorations is upon us. Handmade crafts bring character and comfortability to a space because pride and creativity comes with making personalized decorations from scratch. The best decorations are crafted just from construction paper and a pair of scissors. Here are three decorations that can brighten up any room during the holiday season.

Painted tablecloth

Thanksgiving is centered around food. The holiday celebrates a meal that connects many different cultures. Therefore, the most important part of the holiday is the table setting. With just two materials, one can make a beautiful tablecloth that can bring life to any table setting.

First, take a roll of brown craft paper (one that has the same width as your table). Measure the length of your table and cut the paper to match that length – add a few extra inches if you prefer a longer tablecloth. Then, using a thick paint pen in the color of your choice, draw Thanksgiving decals and write guest names so their name will be featured by the seat in which they will sit.

Pie Garland

The little decorations are what add to any space. A staple of the fall holiday is pie – a cute little decoration can bring Thanksgiving to life in a cute way.

First, cut brown felt paper into an isosceles triangle with the bottom being five inches in length. Next, cut white felt paper into a seven inch strip and, using a hot glue gun, glue to the bottom of the triangle. Every half an inch, scrunch the white strip to give “the top of the pie slice” a little texture. Cut six white strips one inch in width. Weave each piece together and glue them onto the brown triangle to give the illusion of the top of an apple pie. Repeat this step three times.

Next, take a two foot long ribbon and glue the felt pie slices six inches apart on the ribbon. In between each slice, glue a red bow onto the long red ribbon. The red bows are tied together using a separate, new piece of ribbon.

Although the pie slices can be an intricate craft, the garland can give Thanksgiving joy to any room before, during and after the celebrations.

Turkey Hats

Childhood joy brings essence to any holiday, especially the winter holidays. Making a little turkey hat for every guest can bring laughter to a dinner table. Using brown, red, white, black and orange paper, a new character can be invited to the holiday.

First, cut the length of a four inch wide strip of brown paper to match the diameter of a guest’s head. Glue the two ends of the paper together to make a circle. Then, cut two three inch diameter white circles and glue each next to each other on the brown crown. Cut one inch diameter black circles and glue onto the white circles to make it look like eyes. Next, cut an orange isosceles triangle with the bottom measuring about four inches in length. Glue this piece underneath the eyes onto the brown crown. Finally, cut three similar leaves out of three different shades of red construction paper and glue them behind the eyes on the crown fanned so the ends are glued together but the tops are separated. After all of these steps are complete, a new hat can be added to your guests’ collections.

Decorations can make a holiday feel much more special, especially when each decoration is handmade. Make a painted tablecloth, a pie garland or a turkey hat to celebrate Thanksgiving this year.
