As I sit down to write my 90th – and final – Her Campus article, there is so much I can reflect on.
I joined Her Campus back during my freshman year of college. After a bunch of long days with Welcome Week, I was looking forward to going to the Involvement Fair and joining some clubs. As a commuter student, I knew that my way to get involved on campus and to meet people was by joining a club.
I remember walking past each of the tables and taking in all of the clubs and their displays. The Her Campus table immediately piqued my interest. The table was decorated with anything and everything pink. A pink table cloth, pink flowers, pink merch, pink candy. Anything that could be on display, and in the color pink, was.
As I got closer to the table, I noticed there was a picture of The Summer I Turned Pretty on one of the club member’s laptops. I asked the member what the club was and she shared that Her Campus was an online magazine, similar to BuzzFeed. She explained that you can write about anything you want, from pop culture to personal experiences.
This instantly caught my attention. I loved to write and there’s nothing I love more than pop culture. I quickly put my name on the sign-up sheet and excitedly waited for the first meeting.
I vividly remember my first Her Campus meeting. The co-presidents at the time went over how writing for Hofstra’s Her Campus chapter worked and then we began to pitch our own article ideas. I had pitched the idea that I could write weekly Dancing With The Stars (DWTS) recaps and I took these recaps very seriously. This then became a tradition I followed for each DWTS season during my time in Her Campus!
As I wrote my weekly DWTS recaps and other article ideas I came up with along the way, I ultimately ended up writing the most articles of any Her Campus member – a total of 16 articles in my first semester! (I ironically wrote 16 articles during this last semester as a Her Campus member as well.)
During my freshman year, I was struggling to make friends and find my place at Hofstra. As I was trying to find my way, the place where I always felt welcomed was Her Campus. Everyone in the club was so incredibly sweet and I really looked forward to the biweekly meetings.
As my freshman year came to an end, the co-presidents asked me if I would be open to becoming one of the co-presidents for the upcoming year. Being co-president of Her Campus was something I had definitely thought about, but I didn’t expect it to be something that I would take on as early as my sophomore year. I happily accepted the position and it was one of the best decisions I made during college.
Going from just a Her Campus member and writer to becoming the Her Campus co-president really opened my eyes to everything an E-board does for a club – especially the presidents. From planning the meetings, editing and publishing members’ articles, leading the other E-board members, assisting with the social media team to approving and overseeing the semesterly budget, there was so much that the co-president oversaw. Despite the time commitment of being co-president, I don’t regret taking on the position at all.
When I came on as co-president, there weren’t many active members due to most of the club’s members graduating out at the end of the previous semester. The E-board and I were very passionate about growing the club. I would say we were very successful in our goal since we saw the club grow to over 30 members!
Over my three years as co-president, I got to work with the best E-boards. Each of the women who held the positions over the years were so dedicated to their jobs and the club as a whole. I wouldn’t have been able to do it without all of the hardworking women by my side.
One of my greatest accomplishments during my time as co-president was our chapter reaching nationwide Elite status for our chapter’s work during the spring semester of my Junior year. Finding out we had moved up from Gold status made me incredibly proud of all our members and E-board’s dedication to the club.
Being co-president also presented me with the opportunity to attend the annual Her Conference event in New York City in 2024. It was super cool to get to attend an interactive conference surrounded by other young women who were members of their own Her Campus chapters around the country. I luckily get to attend Her Conference again later this month!
Besides our meetings, my favorite part of being co-president was getting to edit and publish everyone’s articles. Three years later, I still got excited to write and publish my own articles, so I know how exciting it is for other members to see their work published on the site.
Another one of my favorite memories as co-president was the semesterly Involvement Fairs, especially the one in the fall. I loved getting to talk about Her Campus and recruit new members, the same way the co-presidents did when I was the freshman at the Involvement Fair.
If I told my freshman self that she would become the co-president of the fun little club from the Involvement Fair, and that she would hold the position for three years, I don’t think she would believe it. I can never thank Her Campus enough for the best experience. I know that I will always look back at my time in Her Campus with the biggest smile on my face. All I can hope is that Her Campus will continue to mean as much to the younger and future new members as it did to me.
Bye!
