Must See Monday: Once Upon a Time

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Hofstra chapter.

September by far is my favorite month. It’s not just because it’s my birthday or because it signals that summer is really over and new and exciting things are head, but it’s really because new and returning television shows premier. Whether it be a decade favorite like Grey’s Anatomy, a fresh comedy like a la The Goldberg’s or thrillers like Homeland, for me, Christmas comes early ever year!

I’ve never really watched a show before that makes me feel like a kid again, unless you count re-runs on YouTube of 90’s classics like Rocket Power and Double Dare 2000. However, Once Upon a Time allows me to relive my childhood at the age of 21. Long story short, the show is about all of your favorite fairytale characters like Belle and the Evil Queen, stuck in our world after a curse, unaware of who they really are, and the only one who can break it is the savior, also known as the child of Prince Charming and Show White. Jennifer Morrison, Ginnifer Goodwin, Lana Parilla, Josh Dallas, Emilie de Ravin, Colin O’Donoghue and Robert Carlyle star.

Fair warning, there might be a few spoilers ahead, but I’ll do my best!

What’s This Show Really About?

-Once Upon a Time is far from your ordinary take on classic childhood fairytales. Created by Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis, who are known for their work on one of my favorite television shows ever, Lost, I knew to expect a variety of twists and turns, which turned out to be an understatement. The purest characters can turn out to be the biggest villains, the noblest can be nothing more than a pure shepherd, and villains can actually become heroes. The show’s main epicenter is really around the concept of family and love, and how those relationships can come in many different ways, and true love’s kiss doesn’t necessarily need to be between Prince Charming and Snow White, but rather a mother and son. There’s redemption, triumph and devastation. In a nutshell, it’s TV gold.

Why You Should Watch This: If you want to feel like a kid, fall in love with troubled characters or experience any type of raw emotion, this show is for you. It will pull at your strings at times, giving you insight into the real reason as to why the Evil Queen despises Snow White and how Captain Hook lost his hand. There are plenty of twists and thrills and things that you will never, in a million years see coming. Your favorite characters from Mulan, to Peter Pan to Elsa from Frozen have all played iatrical roles, and those are just three out of over 50 characters. What you thought you knew becomes all but a memory, and I can safely say that you will never look at those classic Disney movies the same way. Rumplestilskin plays dual roles as both the Beast from Beauty and the Beast and the Crocodile from Peter Pan, where as the Evil Queen begins a romance with everyone’s favorite thief, Robin Hood.

There’s plenty of odes to the classic tales we hold dear to our hearts like this,

Tons of humor and lots of passion.

Three Final Notes:

1. Your head will hurt when you try to figure out the family tree on this show. Simply put: everyone is related and connected somehow.

2. Flashbacks, flashbacks and more flashbacks. Beautiful costumes, insane scenery.

3. The men on this show are just drop dead gorgeous.

I mean…

SERIOUSLY!!!

Happy Watching!
