The Most Important Winter Skincare Article Ever

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Hofstra chapter.

Another skincare post?! You betcha! You can never have too many informational skincare tips, especially with the winter season approaching. Get ready to layer up on clothing and extra skincare products to keep your body healthy and hydrated for the upcoming cold months. If you feel like you aren’t stocked up on the proper skincare, then keep on reading and get out your credit card to splurge at Sephora afterward!

The most important product is a moisturizer! Regardless of the season, you should always be moisturizing your face. It is especially important to moisturize in the winter because the cold air makes your skin even more dry and flaky than normal (and that is not fun to handle)! It is super important to keep your skin soft and hydrated, and here are some products to consider when shopping:

For lighter, daily moisturizers, I recommend Cera Ve—a drugstore brand—or the Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream. Both of these products will get the job done and make your skin softer than ever, so you have a smooth makeup application and a hydrated face all day. They are lighter on the skin so your face doesn’t feel greasy (ew, who wants that?). For heavier moisturizers, I recommend Drunk Elephant’s Lala Retro Whipped Cream. This is the best product to use overnight; after you’ve washed your face and are getting ready for bed. Apply an even amount on your face and neck (do not forget your neck, it’s just as important!) and wake up in the morning with the freshest, softest skin ever. It’s on the higher end, but so worth it if you want to properly take care of your skin (they also have mini sizes which are cheaper)!

My next important product to give your skin a boost during the winter months are face masks! You can never go wrong with a relaxing face mask to put on while you’re doing homework or watching Christmas Countdown movies on Freeform (shoutout to my favorite movie Elf)! Here are some of my favorites:

If your skin is feeling extra dry, I recommend the GlamGlow ThirstyMud Hydrating Mask! It’s definitely something to spend the extra dollar on (they have different sizes, too!), plus it smells amazing and makes your skin feel super soft and hydrated after! Another product is Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Overnight Hydrating Mask. If you think your skin needs more than just a moisturizer, throw this mask on before you go to bed and you will wake up with life-changing results (no, I’m not being dramatic). Another cheaper solution can be the sheet masks from Ulta. Their sheet mask section is actual heaven; with so many options that range from $2-5! My favorites are the Yes To Grapefruit Glow Boosting Sheet mask, Tomatoes Clear Skin Acne Fighting Sheet Mask and the Miracle Oil Calm & Soothe Primrose Oil Mud Mask. These masks are all extremely helpful in the winter, with the extra glow boost for dull winter skin and irritated acne prone skin from the cold air.

Next, I can’t stress enough the importance of eye care. Your under eyes are sensitive and one of the first areas prone to wrinkles! Keeping this area extra moisturized is a key rule to skincare. Some products to consider are:

Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Eye Concentrate Cream: this soothing treatment leaves the under eye area feeling strengthened and replenished, and diminishes the appearance of fine lines. Another product is Origins GinZing Refreshing Eye Cream to help brighten, soften and depuff the under eyes for the winter season. If you want a softer under eye area, and want to start the prevention of wrinkles early, I recommend you buying one of these creams!

Exfoliating may seem like a hard no during the winter, but it’s actually extremely important! Exfoliating to get rid of the dead skin on your face helps hydrate and renew your skin, making it feel soft and fresh again. Tatcha’s Rice Polish Foaming Enzyme Powder is the perfect winter product. It comes in four different forms for every skin type. Mixing this rice powder with water forms a cleansing exfoliator which helps get rid of dry, flaky skin, and makes your skin feel baby smooth afterward! This product is on the high-end side, but still important to consider! A cheaper alternative is SheaMoisture African Black Soap Problem Skin Facial Scrub. This is the perfect winter product to help exfoliate your skin while getting rid of acne problems too!

My last product to check off on this list is lip care. Your lips are such an important part of skincare especially because they get extremely chapped with the winter season. I strongly recommend the GlamGlow Exfoliant and Balm Duo (which comes as a package deal around Christmas time)! This is the best product I have ever put on my lips, and I wake up with the world’s softest lips (again, no dramatics). There are also Sephora Collection Hydrating Lip Mask’s available for only $3 for a cheaper alternative!

I hope you consider at least one of these products for this season! If you want to feel boujee and look amazing while feeling so, treat yo’ self and hop on to Sephora.com to start shopping!
