HU Style: Rainy Day Attire

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Hofstra chapter.

Every girl can agree that the rainy weather tempts us to just throw on our comfiest sweatpants, move our hair out of the way, and run out the door, especially when there are classes to make it through. We all secretly love those days when there’s an excuse to bum around, but attire for a rainy day can actually look cute and be comfortable too!

Umbrella

The first step to making it through a rainy day is having your umbrella. Although it’s such a hassle to carry around, you’ll thank me later while you’re walking across campus trying to make it to class in a storm. The umbrella is the most important item on this list because it will keep you dry and your outfit looking fabulous! The best part? No rule says your umbrella has to match your outfit, so buy whatever funky pattern you want! I never leave the dorm on a cloudy day without my J.Crew Factory polka-dotted umbrella.

Rain Boots

Rain boots are essential to making a rainy day outfit look chic. Boots tend to dress up almost anything and, believe it or not, the same goes for those chunky, rubber rain boots. And let’s be honest: what girl doesn’t want an excuse to buy another pair of shoes? If there’s ever a time to experiment and have some fun, it’s in the rain! Buy a color that pops. This may be the only case when it’s acceptable to wear a firetruck red or bright yellow boot. When picking out a color, just keep in mind that these shoes are bound to be covered in mud eventually, so you want to make sure the color won’t be too revealing or be prepared to do a bit cleaning. My favorite pair is my navy Original Tall Hunter boots. Although pricey, these shoes are comfortable, and the color doesn’t reveal anything!

Sweaters and Scarves

This is the part where everybody wants to throw on a sweatshirt and call it a day, but there is a way to complete your look comfortably. The answer to all of our prayers is the sweater. Sweaters can be just as comfortable as your favorite baggy sweatshirt AND look way more fashionable! There’s literally an infinite amount of styles to choose from, whether you want the oversized, effortless look or a classier look. Also, don’t be afraid to top it all off with a thick scarf or hat to stay warm.

Jackets

An extra jacket to stay warm or keep your favorite sweater dry underneath is always a smart idea! You can go with the obvious choice of a classic raincoat, a trench coat, or even a vest. It all depends on how chilly it is outside, but your umbrella should do the trick if a coat isn’t necessary!
