December is finally here and as the semester begins to wrap up for college students, it is time to start thinking about the holiday break. For some, this entails preparing for the task of Christmas gift shopping for others or for yourself. Many girls of all ages are looking to write their own list of holiday gifts and a popular Christmas-list item this year are Uggs. Now, you may have just gotten extreme nostalgia for your adolescent years from the 2000s to the early 2010’s where Uggs were the highest fashion standard. However somehow now in the 2020s, Uggs have made a resurgence in popularity despite having a sour reputation for some years in between.

The beginning

The style of Uggs that debuted the brand’s popularity was the Classic Tall Boot.

These Uggs were the staple of early 2000’s boots, sported by many celebrities and figures such as Kate Middleton and Selena Gomez. This was the style that you would most likely have seen every middle school girl wearing no matter the day or time of year. Another boot that was similarly adored by all in the early 2000s was the Bailey Bow Boot. Similar to the Classic Boot but with cutesy silk bows lining the back. Both of these boots were ones that were mostly ridiculed in later years after their desirability faded and they became outdated or “cheugy”.

In between stages

In a break-away from the classic suede and fur style boots, Ugg created the Fluff Yeah fuzzy slipper and it rose to popularity in 2018. This brought a new life and resurgence to sales for Ugg as celebrity promotion played a large part in putting Ugg back on the table.

Today’s fashion

In a re-imagining of the classic Ugg boot, shorter and shorter styles of Uggs became more and more favored in the 2020s. The Classic Mini Boot, a seemingly shorter cut transformation of the classic 2000s Ugg boot, begins to make a comeback. Even more recently sought-after are not only the Ultra Mini boots, but the Ultra Mini Platform boots as platform shoes such as Converse and Steve Maddens dominate the fashionable shoe styles of today. A contributor to these new Ugg styles and the comeback of their brand, is the resurgence of “Y2K” which stands for “Year 2000”. This popular aesthetic has inspired brands and trends of the recent 2020s, giving explanation to the most recent Ugg styles.

What’s on your list?

Just as if you were back in middle school, every teen girl this holiday season will be walking around with a new pair of Uggs. Most likely, the Tasman Slides. These suede boots with colorful patterned detailing have been popularized by TikTok and influencers, which seems to be the key mode of commercializing products nowadays, opposed to celebrity influence as mentioned from the early 2000s. Not only has fashion culture evolved, but so have Uggs. So what will be on your Christmas list this year? All products are linked!
