Makeup can be worn at any age, but it’s important to know the do’s and don’t’s of the products you own. It doesn’t matter whether you wear makeup every day or just once in a while, there are certain habits that should be a must. It can be difficult to keep up on these tasks in your everyday life, but once you start doing them on a regular basis, it will be easy to incorporate them as habits. Besides healthy habits, it is also important to know when you should get rid of your makeup. Sadly we can’t keep it all forever! Here are some healthy makeup habits and tips for when to throw away your makeup.

1. Remove your makeup before you sleep: This is so important. Taking your makeup off before you go to bed will clear up all of your pores, and won’t irritate your skin. It can be hard to remove it after a long day when you just want to pass out, but your skin will thank you later.

2. Keep your makeup in a cool location: Obviously, your makeup will start to melt if it is kept somewhere too warm, but storing your makeup in a cool location will also help to keep bacteria away from your products.

3. Clean your brushes: This is a habit you definitely should not skip. If you use your brushes constantly, you should also clean them because they get built up with product as well as bacteria. You can do this with hand soap and water, and it’s so refreshing to have a soft, fluffy brush again.

4. Don’t share products like mascara, lipstick, or eyeliner: All of these products should be for your use only. You don’t know what other people have going on on their faces, and sharing these things could be super problematic.

5. Pay attention to the expiration date: It’s no surprise that makeup also has an expiration date. There’s a label with a container somewhere on the product that shows you how long you are able to keep the product before replacing it.

6. Get rid of makeup you don’t use anymore: This is hard because you may have loved those products at one point, but now you haven’t used them in a while. Clearing out some of your old makeup will help your skin, plus it gives you space to buy more makeup!

Now that you’ve got an idea of some healthy makeup habits, get to work! Clean those brushes, empty our your makeup drawer, and get ready for your makeup to look better than ever!
